52mm wheel nut socket maximum outside diameter?

Gidday,

Just ordering a 52mm socket to work with the wheel nuts.

I'm going to be using a 3/4" drive (for the leverage) and would rather buy a proper 3/4" socket than a 1/2" version (no need for reducing adaptors then)

From the sparse info I've found the 1/2" versions (marketed specifically as Land Rover wheel socket tools) state an outside diameter of 69mm - but 3/4" versions usually spec around a 74mm outside diameter (if they spec it at all).

Take a look at this video from the 4min mark - specifically 4:42 where you get a good gander at the socket and just prior to that at 4:33 where you see it inserted:

Question: Does anyone have a measure of the inside diameter of the wheel flange on a 2008 Puma? (similar to the tdi era machine he's working on?) - i.e. is it less than 74mm?

Looks good, eyeballing it... maybe.

I don't want to fork out for a tool that wont fit (grinding it down is hardly ideal) - or an adaptor for that matter - the standard tools that do 52mm via 1/2" doesn't feel right if you know what I mean

(I know the torques are low considering the drive size, but that's just me...)

While this will not answer your question I'll through this out there for consideration after going through the same dilemma recently.

Why not buy the 1/2 drive socket as I did.
I carry a full 1/2 drive socket set and a pipe to fit over the breaker bar, I don't carry 3/4 drive gear due to weight.
I've converted from the one use nut to the 2 nut and locking tab set up.
I've retained the spacer and do the first nut up as tight as I can, lock tab on and do the outer nut to secure it all.
This allows me to carry the socket only to match my tools and I can do a wheel bearing on the side of a track/road if needed, I carry a spare set.
With this set up once I removed the 4 staked nuts the stresses on the socket (and required drive size) are greatly reduced.

Just a different way of looking at things I guess. Cheers,

I didn't know the two systems were interchangeable - in fact, I didn't know there were two systems

... (Let alone which one I have)

But thinking about it now, ok, as long as there is enough thread and space then yeah what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

In the meantime I've decided to just go for it with the3/4" and a sliding bar is on its way with a 3/4">1/2" reducer so I can make the most of the 1/2" socket sets I've got. (6 and 12 point). So the 1/2" 52mm is probably the way I'll go.

Going to set up a CNC mill and machinists hovel at the farm one day, tractoring going on also - the 3/4" bar might come in handy... Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Stornoway Grey

I carry a box spanner which has a 3/4 female receptacle incorporate in the non-hex end, Melco I believe, with a 3/4m to 1/2f adaptor so it c an be used with 1/2" socketry. It is much lighter than a 3/4" socket, and is quite strong enough for either two-nut or single-nut systems.

I use the 1/2" drive generic 52mm impact socket with no trouble at all, there is little difference in the o/d of the two drives, it's just the size of the hole where the bar goes in.
Even at a 10mm wall on the socket it'll still fit .

Exactly the info I was after.
