Another one from me sorry
My 2003 td5 sounds very rattly? But when I accelerate it goes away and sounds lovely. It's not the transmission. I know td5's are noisy but this seems to be a wee bit too much. Seems a tad better when warm. I was thinking of putting it in for a health check at a dealer or indi. It's only done 69000 miles with full history.
Thanks.

Definitely from the engine. Almost like a heavy diesel knock.

My td5 does the same on light throttle openings when cold. Diesel clatter. It disappears when you accelerate and goes away almost completely after a couple of miles.

I don't know if it's a sign of a problem or not, but it's always been like it and I've had for 4 years.
It had a service at a local Land Rover specialist and the never mentioned it.

I just assumed they all did it.

My wife's freelander 2 does it too, but it's much better soundproofed so you hardly notice it. 2002 td5 90 county hardtop

Mine (new to me, 76,000) makes a fair racket, sounds a bit tappety/clattery but to be honest I put it down to Land Rover Defender Td5 Engine Syndrome...

I've nothing to compare it to but whilst I'm over sensitive to any noise, like the current low whine (is that the drive shaft/gearbox/diffs/...) I think I can over analyse these things...

So... Current clattery noise is just normal until someone tells me different Smile

I suspect our two vehicles are making the same (normal) noise...

That would be good. Where about are you? You can have a drive of mine and see how it goes.

Mine (145,000 miles....) has always been a noisier TD5 and has always been a bit clattery at idle but over the last few months had gotten steadily a bit noisier and had a pronounced different clatter returning to idle speed at when coming to a stand and sometimes just when it was warm and stood it would do it- a bit of a diesel knock type noise. It went on diagnostics a few weeks ago and one of the injectors was showing up as performing poorly.

It's since had a full reconditioned set....one of which has proceeded to fail (annoyingly) but is being replaced tomorrow under the parts warranty!

Prior to this I had a really annoying rattle at idle that turned out to be one of the 'captive' nuts that hold the engine cover on becoming non-captive and allowing the cover to vibrate and the bolt to rattle about. Sounded 'orrible!

2 stroke oil in the diesel? Is that a common practice?

Some are for and some are against. Plenty to read about it on the net.

Could try a bit of brake cleaner in the diesel while you are at it?

Clatter probably means the injector clearances need resetting.
