No, not the Defender, thank heavens.
A bank holiday Monday, in South West Germany. This morning we discovered a gap in front of the house where my 991 should have been. Sometime between midnight and daybreak thieves made off with my car. Police took a while getting here because they were at a colleagues place down the road, taking details of his absent Cayenne. My girlfriend left the house to go riding and called me from her car to report the absence. I rushed outside, and felt relieved to see the Defender. No sign of the Porsche, though. Both keys quickly located, I am at a loss as to what is going on. A few telephone calls and a visit from plod, and I am a little wiser, but all the more shocked. This is a major problem with vehicles equipped with keyless entry. Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Range Rover all have the same loophole. No, they donīt even have to scan your key command when you actively use it. The key just has to be somewhere in the house within 20 feet of an oustide wall. It is always active, and has only to be scanned and relayed simultaneously. Apparently the technology versed scum wait until all are tucked up in bed, and place a scanning device with an A4 sized aerial up near the entrance of the house (as most leave their keys within a radius of that area). Any keyless entry key or card within 7 meters/ 20 feet will be picked up. His colleague is standing next to the car and using a blue tooth connected relay device which sends an amplified version of the signal from within the house. Touch door handle, car opens, climb in switch on ignition, shifter in N to roll car a few meters (if neccessary) away from house before starting engine. Not a screwdriver, powerdrill, tennisball, coat hanger or other hardware involved. No broken glass or door lock.....the car is just gone.... 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

Scary stuff!! But like you say at least it wasn't the Defender (small consolation)! Thanks for the heads up though! I hope you get it back in good order! James

Sorry to hear that WC90. Your car or company car?
I suppose the trick is to fashion a small key box, lined in lead. Easily done I'm sure. Obviously with the imminent arrival of Mrs Grenadier's TT next week, I take note. Fortunately we have very few thefts here, indeed I left the keys in her mini for three days, in the ignition, doors unlocked, parked outside our house, still there this morning. And with metre thick walls on the barn, we should be safe. But I think I will fashion a lead lined box to be sure. Can't win with the old tech in a Defender, nor the new tech in the very latest models. Tea-leaves will always hanker after what you have got and they don't, and fashion a way to get it. I really cannot understand, and have never understood, why ANYBODY thinks keyless entry is a good idea!
BTW, the box doesn't need to be lead-lined, your not dealing with radioactive isotopes. A Faraday cage will do just as well. Just put the keys in an empty tobacco tin or similar. |

These lead lined boxes are available on the open market. The threat is very real and seemingly impossible to prevent! There are also credit card holders that perform a similar service for your swipe and pay, contactless cards! It is a dangerous world out there! For added security, I put a bit of dowel in the sliding window channel! Doesn't have to be lead lined, what you need is just a Faraday cage, here are some ideas Cheers Ian -------------------- 22MY Defender 110 D200 SE, Fuji White. Kielder 4x4 Safari Instagram @defender_v8 |

Doesn't the car stop when the key goes out of range?
I know when I've dropped my boss off and he's walked off with the keys it's gone bananas. |

On my Discovery 4 the car will keep running until it is switched off, it just flashes a message up on the screen saying the smart key is out of range Cheers Ian

These days it's becoming less and less an option on premium cars. For example the 110 SW I have been leant whilst mine is (still) in workshops is keyless entry. It doesn't lock... Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Hopefully the next generation of car thiefs will be so tech reliant the knowledge of how to break into a vehicle the old fashioned way will be forgotten and defenders will be safe

Thanks for the kind and sympathetic comment. Much appreciated.
Yes, its the company car, so, to be honest, Iīm most concerned about the old Ray Bans and an umbrella that i left in there. Unlike the Defender there is no time or money spent on extras, and it is still in production. It just scares the shxt out of me how easily they get access to your gear. A small steel cooking pot is apparently enough to keep signal out of range. Where do I live? Feels like Mexico city or Sao Paolo right now! 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

I just looked at the video that Hairy Dan posted. Thanks, I didnīt have time yesterday.
Well it doesnīt take much to stop the signal, but it does make it clear what a joke keyless entry is. At least the name is appropriate. There is a market for attractive and clevery designed metal key enclosures. Anyone looking for a business venture? 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |
