Car suddenly doesn't start
The car (2011) has not been in as regular use for the last couple of months but it has been used at times with no bother.
It was used maybe 5 days prior and then on Saturday morning it wouldn't start. I can't remember the complete range of noises (nothing major) but the one that stuck in my head was the repetitive clicking.

Used my battery jump start on it and all was fine. No further issues and started just fine again after a 10 mile run to the chilli farm.....

I haven't used it again since Saturday and I've not done any testing but off the top of your heads, any ideas what it may be?

Clicking will be starter solenoid probably, due to insufficient charge in the battery. A 10 minute run is probably not enough time for it to charge properly. get it started and take it for a good run, should allow the battery to be charged more.

Thanks both, I particularly mentioned the short run but didn't say that I had 2 further stops and starts on the way back, so in say 20 miles it was stopped and started three times of its own accord with no bother.

Unless the battery was just borderline to start with then I was confused how it appeared to be ok subsequently.

If it had been just borderline to start with would I'd have expected to get the car turning over even if only slowly.

Would that not be the case and does this give you any more to go on with?

Just to add, I will check the earth but it stopped working suddenly and just as quickly became well again, wouldn't I expect a few more intermittent issues if it was loose(ish)?

Depends on how rough the roads are, whether it's tighter or looser etc.
Variable.
The earth clamp isn't the best design.

Charge the battery with a decent charger and you will know the state of play; as you start the charging process.

A warm engine will turn over far more easily than a cold engine! Plus won't demand glow plugs.

Driving for a short period will not fully charge the battery.

Thanks again and will do all these things but just for info I tried it this evening, so it had not been started since Saturday morning, and it fired up first time just like normal...

disconnect battery, clean connections, check earths and then clean cable connections on solenoid, fully charge battery, reconnect battery.

Could it be the contacts in the starter which have worn away?

From memory I had very similar problem on my TD5 and this was the issue,
That was in 2012, and it's an 03 vehicle

Bought one of these and fitted it with no problems since on that front.

If you buy a battery booster and connect it to the battery when you start the vehicle the vehicle battery will not be doing all of the work and it will help prolong battery life in a vehicle that is used irregularly and then for short journeys. It won't take your battery as long to recharge after starting the vehicle.
I have a 110 tdi in storage and always connect a battery booster to it when I start it up and it has helped the battery to keep going. Just remember to recharge the booster pack after you use it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I've had a similar problem today where my Land Rover 2.4 will not start yet the battery is fully charged and the battery leads are tight. It started fine after a push start, so I know it's not an alarm fault. When you turn the key you just get a clicking sound. I hope to God it doesn't need a starter as that looks a pig of a job 07 Defender 90 TDCI
