Squeaky serpentine belt.300tdi.
This is really doing my head in. Sad
I have changed the water pump...........Twice,thinking it was that squeaking.
Tried the penny trick. Surprised .Made no difference.
Changed the belt.
De gereased the belt & pullys.
The only thing that stops it squeaking is putting talc on the belt, though it will start squeaking again after a while.
Any ideas guys????
Marc

I had similar a couple of years ago. I too tried the penny trick but it turned out to be the bearing in the the tensioner pulley.

It is possible if you have a good bearing supplier to get a new bearing and swap it out. Also a lot cheaper doing this than replacing the tensioner unit complete.

Hi Phil
But if it was the bearing in the tensioner, why does the squeak stop when I dust the belt with talk?
Thanks
Marc

Marc,

I missed that bit sorry.

One possibility is that the talc lets the belt slide a little without squeeking if it is slightly out of line.

Have you tried cleaning any grease etc off the belt and pulleys?

Hi jeffers
Does the squeak come back after a while, when you have squirted it with silicone spray?

Let me see if I can get this in the right order:

Tried cleaning everything down. Still squealed.

Tried Belt anti squeal spray- this worked for a period of time but only days at a time.

Then tried the penny trick. This puts the tensioner alignment back to where it should be when the pivot wears. (the penny is still there) Didn't make a whole heap of difference.

Then took the belt off to clean it again and discovered that the pulley on the tensioner was flapping around like a fart in a bucket.

Replaced the bearing in the pulley and bingo no more squeal.

I'm convinced that it wasn't the bearing making the noise but somehow responsible for something not running true it was a definite belt squeal.

It may be worth taking the tension of the tensioner and checking the bearing on the pulley if only to rule it out.

Hi Phil
Yes,thats pretty much what I have donn, but not specificaly in that order.
Except, the pully tensioner is not flapping around. Very Happy
& the penny is no longer in.
I'll disengage the tensioner & see if there is any noticable slop in the bearing.
Thanks again.
Marc
