How to connect wires to the battery terminal (2015 Puma)
Hello ! Very Happy

I am working on fitting auxiliary power sockets in the back of my Defender, just behind the cubby-box.

In order supply a negative feed to my power sockets, I was intending to fit this :

just there, by placing it tightened just below the nut located on the top of the negative terminal.

But I just realize that I was a bit too optimistic Big Cry The bolt is far too short and it seems not easy to replace it by a longer one.

Would someone have an idea of a way to connect my negative wires directly to the battery negative terminal, without changing the terminal itself ?

Or, alternatively, which good earth point would you recommend (near the cubby-box or in the battery box), considering that I don't want to drill anything ?

Thanks in advance !

Fabien

Use a bulkhead lip bolt just behind the cubby rear below, it is a steel lip with steel bolt.
That is a good earth but may need a bit of paint removing for excellent contact.
I used this for by Amp earth and that is nearly 50A send really needs a good earth!

Wow, thanks for such a fast answer ! Bow down

I see the bolts you are talking about ; that could be a pretty good location for that !

But I must admit that "a bit of paint removing" scares me ... Even if it's inside, I don't feel comfortable in removing paint from somewhere Rolling Eyes

Try it without removing the paint just with the bolt tightened and then use a multimeter to check for contiuity.
You might find its okay as is, mine was.
The closer the reading to zero the better, just measure from your newly fitted terminal to the battery earth. Thumbs Up

Why not replace the pathetic original battery connector with one that is better suited to the job?

That would be an ideal option, but the car is still under warranty, that's the problem.

Well ... yes, I could give my dealer a call tomorrow to figure out if he would accept to do a job like this.

The trouble is like Blackwolf mentions, the factory clamp is very poor. I had trouble with it myself.
For your use though you'd have to be in mind you'd have to route your wires out of the battery box also.
Impedance reading on mine was 0 or 0.1 so was a very good earth so I don't think that'd be a concern for the bulkhead lip.

So, the bulkhead lip might be the winner Thumbs Up

Any idea of the torque when tightening the nut back, after fitting the connector ? (don't laugh at me, I wouldn't like to see the body falling apart in a turn Laughing )

No idea, tight enough to be firm not over tight. Rolling with laughter
The terminal I fitted on there was around 1mm thick, a gold plated terminal for 4gaugue OFC primary power audio earth.
The bolts have a bit of room on them to take extra.
If one was used up there are about 8 to choose from. Laughing

So... if you follow the battery earth cable out of the seat box, and under the car, it bolts to the chassis rail.

I added my earth connector (for accessories) to that point. There is (on a 2011) a 110mm bolt right thru the chassis (just rearward of the fuel cooler), with a couple of earthing straps there...you can just add yours... job done.

Seems easiest to me...

On mine, I just used a long bolt and shaped the head to match the original with a grinder. Fitted as normal then used a ring terminal and a nut on top. Whilst in warranty I didn't want to cut the original battery cable.

I also used a longer bolt with a filed down head. Works fine and is a great place to add an extra earthing strap that bolts to the inside of the battery box, this helps with security.
