Bolt fouling hose
MOT on the truck today. Passed, but on looking underneath with the tester a bolt on the steering column uj is fouling the hose immediately adjacent when the steering is turned. Anyone else come across this, and is there a cure? The hose is slightly scored. It can be replaced obviously but a longer term fix is needed. Would appreciate any thoughts. Didn't think to take a pic at the time unfortunately. Ian One wife - livid

Some hoses in problem areas have a woven protective sheath on them.
On my 90 on a radiator hose that passes next to PAS header it is against it, it has a protective sheath on it.

This one doesn't appear to have that protective sleeve. Just back from the village garage who will order and fit a replacement hose and make up some kind of bracket to keep it clear in future. Always something different with a Land Rover problem! The hose was worn through to the start of the canvas so glad the tester spotted it. One wife - livid

Yes, a very common problem indeed. The hose connects the turbo to the intercooler and will eventually fail with a dramatic effect on performance!

The solution (on a 2.4, at least) is to be very careful when fitting the hose, and make sure that it is positioned clear of all obstructions before tightening the hose clips. Positioned correctly there will be no problem.

Mine has had no issue, but may pay to check that one won't be happening in the foreseeable?

Look between the air filter housing and the turbo, and you'll see the hose that runs from the turbo to the lower corner of the intercooler. It is actually quite hard to see. The problem is that if the hose has been carelessly fitted, the pinch bolt that secures the steering column lower shaft to the steering box will rub the hose as the steering is turned. Since you really cannot see the bottom of the hose at all, the best thing is to feel the hose and check that there is sufficient clearance between it and the bolt.

The 2.2 has a similar problem but due to the different design of the hose requires an additional support bracket to be fitted. The 2.4 is fine provided that the hose is properly positioned.

That sounds like the turbo hose that was the subject of a recall,...should now have a bracket around it to stop it fouling the knucle on the steering shaft?

Another option is to get rid of the rubber hose and replace it with a stainless steel hose like the entreq or another lesser brand

The recall was only on the 2.2, not on the 2.4.

I checked mine today whilst fiddling around, I can see it is very close clearance but not close enough to touch.
So I'm okay on mine but I can see why it could be an issue. Only around a 5cm gap.

The garage changed mine on Wednesday. It was scored by the uj bolt but not quite right through. The mechanic said that the replacement was a bit shorter and braided as reinforcement. He was going to make up a bracket to maintain the clearance but didn't need to in the event. Glad the mot tester spotted it. One wife - livid

5 cm is two inches, a massive gap! 5mm is more common.

Remember the hose can swell under boost.
