Would something like this impact on the warranty? Looking at the pictures it seems like I'd have to start drilling away at the steelwork....? |

I did mine DIY using aerosol, so if you have no ompressor no problem .
About £150 to do a full on job. The going rate as a rule to the best of my knowledge for being done for you is £300 - £500 I think. Usually in the middle. Even then, in my opinion very expensive but it's labour intensive so can expect otherwise really. |

Yes, lasted well, over two years at least now I think.
Needs checking now though, they all need redoing every once and a while. Dinitrol bought via Rejel or on eBay. Photos of mind 3rd page here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic22484....p;start=30 PPE highly recommended. |

I had mine (new) delivered to my house on a trailer, put it straight into the garage and it only emerged after I'd finished my own rust-proofing, etc, so it never got used in the wet before I'd done it. I've seen two year old ones with no additional protection that look dreadful underneath. If you do it yourself, you and the ground below it will get covered in whatever stuff you use, but if you can put up with that, you'll really get to know your vehicle. 'Ten year's protection' is bullshot. Whatever you use will need checking and touching up every couple of years. When choosing your rust proofing, bear in mind that Waxoyl (the 'Hoover' of the rust-proofing industry - we all 'Hoover' the carpet with a Dyson, don't we) is from the 1960s, and an idea of its long term effectiveness can be gained by looking at the tens of thousands of cars 'protected' by it from then up until the 1990s that are still in everyday use on the roads. In other words, you might like to use a more recently developed product that doesn't need thinning, or heating up, or anything else in order to be able to apply it. I love Bilt Hamber's (British) stuff, others use (Swedish) Dinitrol, of which I have no first hand experience. |

Chris (Zagato) has extremely good feedback on this forum for thorough rustproofing and a quick search should also reveal his handy rustproofing guide.
Be careful - I had one company who is very active on this site do my rustproofing on a previous range rover and it was lametable. I'm still angry about it!! Please don't spray your dual finish alloys black - it would be sacrilige! you'd be better off selling them and getting some boosts to powder-coat - or even some sawtooths. But you might want to get the easy stuff (grill and lettering) done and then see if you feel it's black enough, or you want to go further. And I'm very jealous - Montalcino red is my favourite colour!! 2002MY Defender 90 H/T |

I know what you're saying about the dual finish... would complete defeat the point if I just sprayed them black!
Black letters already ordered. Spare wheel lock ordered (just received the dispatch email from eBay) Getting a quote from a forum member for postage costs for genuine grille, rad surround and headlight surrounds (get them re-sprayed black). Emailed a company regarding security - looking at maybe the Cobra Cat 5 system... anybody had any experience with this? And don't worry BossHogg! I'm mad in to my detailing so there will be pictures... lots and lots of pictures!! |

Lots on here about rustproofing, in fact it's one of the most commonly covered subjects! Beware companies - or anyone for that matter - offering things like 10 years protection, such assurances are pretty much worthless in the real world where new businesses and individuals can appear and then disappear with regularity.
Despite some new wave Defender owners apparently not wanting to chip a nail or liking to get their hands dirty, DIY is a good way of getting to know your new acquisition and raise an awareness of what areas need to have attention paid to them on a regular basis. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

If you want a full set of genuine LR wheel arches sprayed in Santorini black by forum sponsors Duckworths let me know as I will be putting them up for sale soon. They are immaculate and came off my Firenze red 90 (sold last year) which also had a Santorini black roof. Agreed, Dinitrol suggest checking/top ups after 4 years unless you are wading, off-roading then it is every couple of years.
Agree also, £490 is my new charge... includes the body also, equally important as the chassis... |

Thanks for all the replies so far!
I spoke with the dealer on Friday and they were due to receive the vehicle that day! They're getting her PDI'ed and registered next week and I should be picking her up on Friday afternoon! CANNOT WAIT! So I'm trying to get everything sorted so I can secure her that weekend in Leeds before she returns to Birmingham! I've been ringing around a few mobile alarm fitters and nobody seems to be answering the phone! I'm leaning towards the Cobra system for a few reasons largely the App integration with my phone and the insurance recognition. The spare wheel lock has already arrived from X-Eng and will be fitted on Saturday morning. I'll be installing a strategically placed kill switch for the battery. Disklok will be ordered next week. Saw on a thread about somebody putting some pipe foam behind the indicators to prevent scroats getting in this way (??) so I'll look at doing that also! With the exception of a pedal box (which due to practicality and storage I don't think is a viable solution) what would you all suggestion I do to ensure the car is as secure as it reasonably can be? |

If I had my time again:
Rust proofing from day 1, Sub woofer and head end with subwoofer control - that alone made a huge difference being able to pull the bass away from the other speakers. |

What sub etc would you recommend?
Anything else in terms of security? Rather get what I have sufficiently secured (I realise if they want it they'll take it but if I can put them off / delay them, all the better!) before I start adding to it |
