Clutch
Hello gentlemen!

My defenders clutch started rattling this weekend.
I know this has all been asked before but I can't find the answer...
How much should I be spending?
Does it need the whole clutch changed or just the kit?
If the kit which one?
Any recommendations of where I should go to get it replaced?
Thank you

Regards

Fabio

I have been quoted 875£ from main dealer...
848 from another and 507 from a specialist with a brookwell clutch?
Where would you go?
I am tempted to go to the specialist he has good feedback on here.
Thank you

Fabio

I paid £300 labour plus parts that were supplied as a warranty replacement by the clutch manufacturer.

I used a very good non specialist country village garage

All superb.

It was a Borg and Beck clutch - apparently they had an issue some time ago with soft springs in the center plate (not the bigger 'drive' springs) and these earlier ones rattle. If you fit a B&B clutch make sure its recent stock.

Good luck

Keith

The quote was for a brookwell clutch I think...
The same as the ones fitted at main dealers...
I don't know how true this is.
Thank you

When does it rattle?

On mine, the clutch tensioning springs broke a long time ago (they're not up to the job). It chatters noisily when at idle. When I dip the clutch, the vibration reduces and I don't notice it when I'm driving (I guess the noise of the engine drowns out the rattle).

It is irritating but doesn't affect the performance at all so I've lived with it for the best part of 4 years. Expensive fix because it's a full disassembly and removal to replace. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
+ New Defender 110 First Edition

Hello sir.

It rattles when cold.
Hot doesn't do it as much.
I have taken it to a specialist who said that it is only just starting...
My problem is that I am going camping to Italy in July.
I am going to tow a trailer tent there and back.
And if the defender breaks down there or on the way it will ruin the holidays...
That is why I am going to have it changed before.

Regards

Fabio

The only problem with this approach is that eventually the springs fall out and the repair can become significantly more expensive.
