Centre Diff shim service life- why I went to an ATB.
What service life are you getting from centre diff shims in your LT230 transfer box?
Signs for this could be brass flecks in the oil or drive line slap.

The reason I ask...
With some help from a couple of mates I've had the transfer box out/repaired/ refitted in a weekend.
The Puma has done 124'000km(77'000mile) so it had the normal intermidiate shaft leaks.
As it was coming out to check the gearbox coupling and fix the leaks I took the opportunity to order a ATB to eliminate centre Diff shim wear and driveline slap.
I learnt my lesson with the now gone Disco2 where it had worn 2 Diff shims at similar mileage.
I pulled the diff apart and here is the result.
1xmissing shim, 1x1/2 shim only, 2x extreamly worn shims.

After a quick 30 minute run all I can say is WOW.
The drive line has been transformed and on dirt it feels far more positive.
A fortnight to go for the next weekend trip away to see how it goes towing and playing in the scrub.

Cheers Kyle. Cheers,
Kyle.

Hi Kyle. Interesting read. excuse my ignorance here. Now that you have the ATB installed in your transfer box does this mean you no longer have the ability to lock the centre diff? Or does it mean you retain this function but whilst your diff in not locked the ATB is sending power automatically where it is needed?

Fitted an Ashcroft unit and as has been said it can still be locked when required Smile

Fitting the ATB was part of reducing known failure points as the Defender is used as an off road tourer rather then a daily driver. Cheers,
Kyle.

3 weeks ago I have just reconditioned the transfer box in our Disco2 with aprox. 200 000km. The diff shins were still there, with more than 50% thickness. I had to do it, because of oil leakage around the intermediate shaft. I was also thinking about the Aschrofts ATB, but the price is a bit high. So I have only used the HD cross pin. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I'm getting a lot of slap in the drive train and mechanic suggested it was in the transfer box, would this be a diy install or should it be left to the professionals? Tdci 110 DC
