I have Boomslang Performance Headlight Loom that I thought would be a simple job to install, but of course nothing is as simple as you think on some Defenders.
My problems are these, the headlight bowl fitted is a full plastic dome type and the wires to the H4 connecters pass through the bowl via a small aperture with a grommet, the wires have obviously been fed through the small hole in the bowl first and then the Lucar connectors to the H4 bulb connector fitted after, and to remove the original H4 connectors I would have to remove the Lucar’s and cut the wires free of the Lucar connectors as they will not pass through the small hole, I have tried and they won’t. This means that to fit the new loom H4 ceramic connectors I would have to cut the wires inside the bowl to free them and then drill large holes in the bowl to pass the Boomslang Ceramic H4 connectors through. Right so this is my question, could I cut off the original wires outside the headlight bowl leaving the original fitted H4 connectors to the bulb and then cut off the ceramic connectors from the Boomslang Headlight Loom and then crimp the Boomslang wires to the wires of the original fitted H4 connectors, then just join one of the ceramic connectors from the Boomslang Loom to the original headlight wires to activate the switching relay. This would make the job of fitting the new loom a lot simpler. My second question is this: if I do this crimp joining of the original H4 connectors to the Boomslang loom would there be any reduction in power, as obviously the whole point of fitting is to get more power to the bulbs. Any help or advise on the above appreciated, For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

In these scenarios it can be easier to start from scratch!
The bigger the conductor the lower the voltage drop, but as the distance drops, this is less significant, so if you were to use a short section of the existing wires it would not be a problem, as long as A) you make a good and waterproof connection (strongly suggest you splice, solder and heatshrink) and B) the existing wires are in a good condition. Ceramic connectors don't offer any direct performance improvement (aside from any variance in the quality of pins), they just have better heat resistance, so don't be too concerned there, as long as the existing connectors are fine. Personally, I'd take the connectors off, feed the new loom in and put new terminals on, and if you have any deterioration in the wiring I suggest you do this. How you reconnect the old feed isn't important as long as it's nice and water-tight. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK Discovery 3 TDV6 Auto HSE Zambezi Silver |

I Had this issue and slid the connections out of the ceramic thing to fit them.
