.... the fun police are out in force again.

jump from a defender with a big map, intercooler, straight through exhaust, hybrid turbo, airbox mods, lowering springs, uprated arbs big brakes and tell me you don't have to adapt your driving style?

If you find it hard to believe; call up your insurance company rather than slating someone who actually gave the OP some valid information?

If anybody wants any measurements etc pm me. i wont comment again.

The rear's create the biggest problem, its a rare piston size to get the required brake pedal feel..

Theres also twisted who do a alcon setup, pretty much identical to my setup but says alcon..
Bowler do a setup which is what i was gonna get but they don't use 6 pot front's and i couldnt resist
tarox do a 6 pot front which i personally think looks naff.. but is the cheapest option.


Like OMG, just came across this thread by chance. May I ask where did you get your AP Kit from? I'm happy to pay AP (Alcon, Brembo etc) prices when I upgrade, but I'm not liking the mark-ups I'm seeing across the big four or five players: JE, Bowler, Twisted, Urban etc. Did you get the kit from a standard brake specialist? Sensible price for the kit. Front and rear, AP upgrade is absolutely where I want to go. Some on the thread have said it's not neccessary, but as just one example from a daily Alpine driver, I can assure them that approaching the dual carriageway hairpin bend on leaving the Chamonix Valley at 90kmh allied to 2000kgs of mass (that's some pretty special momentum), the feedback and power of the anchors aren't what I'd like. Defintely has fade, as by that point I will have lready driven 20kms of other bends, with a further 15km to go. Yes, as some will point out, I could approach the bend more slowly, but what's the fun in that? As a daily, to/from drive, my brakes take a battering even when be driven gently. Start putting in 75km+ and it really gets fun!! Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

From the prices quoted i think rakeway is the best price for the APs. If you wanted the Alcons im sure you could put a kit together for a better price than twisted.

It can do yes, they're a safety feature.

It depends on your insurer though, usually the more specialist insurers used to dealing with modified vehicles will be much more willing to take it into consideration. Some of them if you phone up and ask for a quote telling them you've done loads of work on the engine and increased the power, the next question they ask is "What have you done to the brakes?". In some extreme cases they'll refuse to quote if you're still running standard brakes, ie you have a car where you've replaced a 50bhp engine with a 200bhp one, but you're still running standard drum brakes all round.....

Insurance often goes down if you have a tow bar fitted too, statistically they get less claims for vehicles fitted with tow bars than those without so they charge lower premiums. Even with the direct mainstream insurers.

Insurers vary from being super efficient and knowledgable to frankly idle/dim.

Many moons ago, 2001 from recollection, I had a massive pile-in on my road bike. In its day an expensive 'carbon-fibre everywhere' built to spec beauty. Now they're two to a penny, with many, many cyclists riding 10k€ plus machines (likely the equivalent price now). I had it insured with a standard insurer as there were no bike specialists at the time.

When I called in, explained the accident, the damage, the expected cost for repairs etc, the telephonist started processing the claim. She first started with the marque. I said 'Trek' and after a pause she replied 'I don't seem to have it on the system'. I replied that it should be, it's a huge firm. She looked again and replied that no, it wasn't there. So I asked her to read out the marques she had listed and she said 'We have ACE, Aprilla, Bimota, BMW....' Big Cry

When I said it was a push-bike (hate that term) I could hear her fall of her chair/spit out her coffee, etc etc. Rolling with laughter Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....
