Mountney steering wheel
I've just fitted a 14" Mountney steering wheel with 36 spline boss to my 87 Defender and for some reason the steering has become really stiff. When I tighten up the nut on the steering column the boss tightens down on to the the plastic steering column shroud, but not enough for it to affect the steering like it does. Any ideas?

Smaller radius of the steering equates to a greater force required to turn it

Mine was exactly the same when I did it with a mountney on my td5 so much so that I took it of and sold it. I've now got a nardi raid 10 (startech before they re-leather it) which is slighter bigger diameter, still requires more effort but not anywhere near as bad as the mountney

I'm not sure if it's the aluminium boss being too tight to the steering column metal collar.

Wales 2007 Defender 90 Other CSW Trident Green
I changed my wheel for a Momo 15 inch, and though the steering was is a little 'tighter' than the original steering wheel, I find the steering control to be much more responsive with the smaller diameter steering wheel especially around winding country lanes. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Sorted it I think. The new steering boss was tight against the old indicator cancelling shroud which didn't come away with the old wheel. Pair of pliers soon sorted that. Thanks for the advice.
