Hi, has anyone fitted a third front seat in a 2009 Defender 90 TDCi?
Any feedback welcome.

I wanted to do this on mine but when I looked into it, although I thought I could probably fit the middle seat from my 1996 Defender, it would be illegal to use it. Safety standards have all changed since the 300 TDI was built and lap belts are no longer acceptable hence the middle seat was never an option on the Puma.

Apart from the illegality of carrying anyone on such a seat, insurance would be compromised.

What do you want to do that for? They'll only argue who gets to sit up front.

Put me on the insurance and swap the 110 with you for the day when you have all the grand kids Cool 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

See the following from the Exmoor Trim website description of the Defender centre seat that they sell.......

"PLEASE NOTE: The centre seat was designed for earlier Defenders so thats pre 2007 Puma.

Many customers do fit centre seats into post 2007 defenders however it is important to clearly understand that the Puma (post 2007) was designed to NOT take a centre seat and if fitted to the standard seat mounting points the High/Low gear shift is very very close to the front edge of the seat base.

The best solution when fitting to a puma is to mount the seat slightly back to give some suitable clearance to the gear shift, this is easier in a 110" or a 90" without a bulkhead. If you have a bulkhead you will need to get the seat back as far as you can and there is enough space to achieve this. This will mean drilling and making new mounting points unless you are happy with the seat position."

This confirms that the post 2007 was designed to NOT take a centre seat, but also suggests that it can be done. I would still want confirmation that it is legal and insurable.

It is legal so long as you have the three point seat belt and advise the DVLA I think
They may ask for it to be checked before they accept it as well

It is possible so long as you follow all the regs correctly

Which as I understand it is just getting the belt fitted, Exmoor Trim helped me a lot when I asked then I got a 2004 anyway

Has anybody actually managed to get an insurance company to accept this modification. Despite the closeness of the gear stick it still looks ideal for a child under 5 who would be in a child's seat anyway.
