2.2 or 2.4 decisions decisions
Hi

Is there any really difference between these two variants? Need to know as sourcing new vehicle, which will be works (farm tracks some fieldwork) and family vehicle.

Decided on Puma as supposed to be more refined than TD5 so would hopefully be an easier sell to missus......

Cheers Dave

I'm sure some will suggest avoiding the 2.2 due to the dpf but in reality I'm not sure it's actually an issue.

I believe the 2.2 is actually more refined and probably has a lot to do with the shorter stroke and inherently less torque.

I've got the 2.4 and to be honest it's great (assuming you can avoid the gremlins but both are susceptible to them). the clutch seems lighter and smoother on the 2.2 but not sure why as I believe they're running the same components?

on this basis alone perhaps the 2.2 is the model to aim for?

both have had recalls so look out for them. good luck,

The reason I went for the 2.2 was road tax is £225 where as I believe the 2.4 its £515. That saving almost pays for the insurance! Possible not the best justification but it made sense to me! Plus I wanted as newer load mileage as I could afford.

If I had the choice between two otherwise identical vehicles I'd have the 2.4 because it doesn't have the DPF (particularly important for short hop farm stuff), doesn't suffer from oil dilution as a result and is generally simpler. It's also harder to fiddle with the ECU on the 2.2 without having to remove it.

2.4 is easier to remap and has less stuff to go wrong.

However, look at the general condition of them and pay more attention to that. I'd have a good 2.2 over a dog of a 2.4 any day.

As do all utility variants. Station wagons from post TD5 to mid 2.4 are higher, everything else is lower.

People seem to play down the differences on here, but in my opinion the 2.2 is vastly better than the 2.4

Smoother, quieter, more linear power delivery plus some general improvements to the rest of the vehicle. Cheers, David

Well not quite Trump land but we also say no substitute for cubic inches.
That is for big block gassers from years ago, the Ford, Chev and Dodge 6-7 liters of pulling power I miss those days my brother burning the tires of my Moms and Dads 460 Ford 7.5liter.
I love my 2.4 Puma BAS made it work great.

Happy with my 2.4 have driven the same model with 2.2 it is ever so slightly smoother and likes higher revs but that is about it, the rev hang of the 2.2 is annoying although I'm sure you can get used to it. Therefore I will stay with my 2.4 and avoid the DPF and oil dilution issues. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

See I'm not sure about the speed limiter. 80-ish is plenty for mine!

Owned both. 2.2 is the smoother and quieter of the two, rev hang is something you quickly adapt to. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
