I like that set up. Does the nas step have support brackets like the tow bar going onto the chassis tie down mounts most of the nas receivers don't appear to and always wondered if they were needed

I think that's one of the best setups I've seen. My only dislike, which is inevitable with detachable bits, is where you store them when they're detached. I'm not a great fan of having my winch stuck out the front, but at least it's out of the way!

I know that there has been much discussion over recent years regarding the safety aspect of detachable tow bars, particularly on the Discovery 3/4, some of this discussion has been on the Disco3 forum and a lot of coverage in Horse and Hound magazine. A number of horse trailers have become detached from Discos with detachable tow bars with some disastrous results. I was originally warned off having a detachable fitted to my first Disco 3 some 12 years by a JLR dealer because they did not believe the fixation was fit for purpose. Personally I would not consider fitting one, I feel safer with a fixed installation that I can easily check for security.

Are you talking about the genuine ones that look like this:

which to my mind are a world apart from the aftermarket types that fit into a square receiver:

I had the former on a RRS and it did nothing but rattle from day one; the latter have the security of the large fixing pin and on the model I had a bolt on the side that could be adjusted to take out any movement.

I think the square receiver ones are more than up to the job to the 3.5 tonne limit.

the keys for the lock were also pathetic - with many stories of them snapping in the locks or not being able to removed from the lock - which normally meant that the locking mechanism had not fully engaged. really not fit for purpose - too many small moving parts that filled with muck and dust and never worked smoothly. Only good thing was that there was a nice bespoke place to store it in the boot.

Hi Sphere

Yes this NAS bar has tie bars back to the Chassis as per a standard tow hitch.

To the best of my knowledge there are no type approved after market detachable tow bar for Land Rover Defenders

The OEM towing equipment for Defenders are what is referred to as Dixon Bates taken over by Bradley Doublelock in Shipley who have now been bought out by the German firm Alko. The Dixon Bates set up is not exactly quick release detachable. The manufacturers of 2" receivers in the UK do not sell them as detachable tow bars but as 2" receivers with something like a recovery billet or a drop plate etc. What the customer attaches to the drop plate is their responsibility. For Defenders you need to consider both the taxation class and age of the vehicle to decide if a non type approved system is legal or not.

Now does the new regulations apply to Defenders?
Quote:

What is Regulation 55.01?
Regulation 55.01 (Reg55) became mandatory for new vehicle types on 29th October
2012.
It replaces EC-94-20 and lays down the requirements of mechanical coupling
devices and components are required to meet in order to be regarded mutually
compatible.

Please note the expression new vehicle types , now my interpretation would be that Defenders built after that date do not have to conform to regulation 55.01 as they are NOT new vehicle types in my opinion.

If you have any doubt I would suggest you contact the actual manufacturers of your preferred 2" receivers for their advice. They will have better understanding of the regulations

I am not a motor vehicle legal specialist.

Supacat, yes I was referring to the LR OEM detachable tow ball. Like you if I wanted a detachable then I would go for a 2inch square receiver type. Defender 90XS SW
Mini Countryman Cooper S
Morgan Plus 8
