They can do.
Mine is playing up a bit on and off but that's due to the faceplate. They do take a battering in the Defender, it's all the vibration etc. |

They're not that expensive for the sort I would be after (basic as they come), so I may just buy a new one and see. |

It could be the circuitry inside is degrading, but it's more likely I'd say that the aerial wiring or connection is degrading. Enough that the seek processing can't determine the signal, but not enough that you car hear a difference?
