Worklight for the defender
Hey guys I just bought myself the rear worklight for the defender but it didn't come with any instructions (Part No. - RTC8921AA). I know its a simple job to setup but any instructions would get me started Big Cry

Cheers guys. '08 LR Defender 110

there is already a 12v feed behind the rear speaker panel (purple +ve, black -ve), why not put a 12v relay over the reversing light and use the 12v feed, that way you can effectively use the reverse switch to switch on and off.

I have one of these instead, 12v rechargable, magnetic, has hooks too.

If yoy put a tree position switch in you can turn it on or off or have it so it comes on with reversing light via relay. Thumbs Up

Have you purchased part number RTC8921AA from Land Rover? The reason I ask is because if you have it comes with full fitting kit, relays switches etc included in the sale (and will have fitting instructions

Hi there,

I noticed the same problem (no instructions), which I thought for the money was ridiculous. The power pick-up is behind the rear offside trim, that is found if you take off the rear speaker trim. I modified the light with an extra wire so I could have the light coming on when reversing. So much better as the Defender reversing light isn’t up to much. You’ll supposed to have a warning light to let you know that the work light is on, but I don’t think it’s a legal requirement and I doubt if you will fail an MOT because of it. I would attach the diagram I used, but I don’t know how to do this, so if you PM me I’ll send it to you.

Whem wiring up work a light, especially if connecting it to the reversing light circuit, remember that:

1) it is illegal to have a bulb of more than 21W in a reversing light,

2) a reversing light must either be switched on/off automatically by the selection/deselection of reverse gear or if worked off a manual switch there must be a warning light (which can be in the switch or seperate) to indicate that it is on

3) a rear worklight cannot legally be illuminated on a public highway unless it is only used in conjunction with an amber warning beacon or amber strobe system.

A lot of folk don't realise this last one, but I have never heard of anyone being done for this.

A trick I quite often do (particularly due to the need to lock a combination padlock on a gate after exiting at night) is to select reverse in the main gearbox and neutral in the transfer box with the engine running, so the reversing light is on to allow SWMBO to close and lock the gate without me having to keep a foot on the clutch.
