"NFU Mutual offered its advice as claims costs for the theft of Defender vehicles rose to £760,000 in the North East.

NFU Mutual has urged Land Rover Defender owners to increase security measures in order to reduce the risk of their vehicles, or parts of vehicles, being stolen.

Latest figures from the rural insurer reveal claims costs for theft of Land Rover Defender vehicles rose by 69 per cent to £760,000 from 2014 to 2015.

TARGET
Theft claims of the iconic vehicle cost NFU Mutual £1.8 million in 2015, an increase of 8 per cent since 2014.

Clive Harris, agricultural vehicle specialist at NFU Mutual said while the Defender is no longer in production, this has made them a bigger target for thieves.

"I urge Land Rover Defender owners to be vigilant and be on their guard. Owners should ensure they have adequate security measures in place and consider fitting an after-market approved immobiliser and a tracking device if possible.

SECURITY
“When not in use Defenders should be parked in a garage or a secure area which is well lit if possible.

"Never leave keys in the ignition and keep keys out of sight at home and when out in public areas; it’s essential that easy opportunities are taken away from thieves.”

REGIONS
Out of the five regions in England, the North East showed the highest cost of Land Rover Defender theft claims in 2015, at £760,000.

The South West had the lowest claim costs at £165,000.

Grr,

I know we all bitch about our insurance premiums but the costs of a claim are nuts when you think about it.

£36,000 Landy goes missing, now even if people are paying 360 a year that's 100 years of premiums, or 100 customers premiums for a year, not counting costs of operating the business. Not that they aren't making money overall I'm sure.

Never really worried about the 'what if' of my cars getting stolen but now since theres no more being built I do tho maybe not as much as I should. 3 Landrovers

Real sorry state for us owners, I guess that's why NFU couldn't offer me a 'competitive' quote. Another shame as their service is excellent. COTAG 4x4 Response
