300Tdi Gearbox Relacement
I am loosing synchro on 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, more so when the engine is cold. Since I am changing the chassis this would be a good time to get a reconditioned gearbox. Ashcroft Transmissions offer re-con gearbox and also have an option of a modest change the gearing on the 5th gear. In this way it will rev lower at high speed, so motorway driving should be quieter. Has anyone had this mod, is it effective/worth it, any downsides?

I had the Ashcroft high ratio mod on my defender when it was manual and really rated it. I would only do it if you have tuned the engine otherwise I feel it doesn't have enough power to pull the higher gearing.

Thanks, I am also fitting an Allisport double sized intercooler, so I have the chance to tweak the fuel pump. Will this be sufficient tuning to cope with the higher gearing?

I would have thought that should be fine to cope with it.
