Land Rover Assist - How good?
Hi All,
In a few months I plan to holiday in France with my 90XS + SWMBO.

With my previous vehicles, non-Land Rover, I had AA Travel Insurance for the car. As the Defender is under Warranty - it would seem that Land Rover Assist does ALL that the AA Insurance did for my previous vehicles.
Can anyone confirm this, and do I need anything in addition. ( NOT talking about Holiday Medical Insurance - just breakdown insurance/repair/repatriation of vehicle ).

Any words of wisdom much appreciated. Bow down Bow down Bow down

As long as the service is the same as in the UK it will be awesome. They even give you a like for like car to continue your journey (unlike the AA who will replace a Defender 110 with a fiesta Rolling Eyes ). Over the 10,000 odd kiles I have traveled in my Defender through Europe it hasn't broke (Touch wood).

I don't know what it is like in other countries but in Australia they will only come to your assistance if you can be reached by a 'normal' 2WD recovery vehicle.

I broke down in France in my last Landy after some idiot put a full tank of petrol in it (I was very tired Whistle )

I called LR assist, they called a local dealer, called me back and kept me informed at all stages. Within two hours the truck was on the back of a recovery lorry (even though this fell inbetween the "lunch two hours") and luckily for me I was 40 minutes away from the nearest dealer. Seeing as I was in central France and in the middle of nowhere I count myself lucky.

A very strange thing happened next, upon arrival at the garage the owner of the garage came out shook me by the hand and without one French huff or puff he told his mechanics to stop working on the other cars and concentrate on my truck. They drained the lines and tank and changed the filters I think and I was back on the road in about an hour and a bit from memory.

I got a charge for some of the bits (but not recovery) and the total bill came to about 60 euros. To say I was gobsmacked by the service is an understatement, how much of that can be put down to LR assist is unknown but having a house in France and knowing that service is an unknown art in the country then I imagine quite a bit.

I live in Oz and was told that they will recover you from where ever you are not just if it's accessible by ordinary vehicle.
My Td5 Defender broke down in Newman and they eventually got a low loader from Hedland to get it and the camper back to Perth.
No quibbles at all and paid us most of our out of pocket expences as well even though it was out of the 3 year warranty and in the LR 4th year extension.
Things may have changed though as that was in '07.

Hi Grockle.
The various motoring organsitaions in Oz do the same thing. In WA it's the RACWA and between them and LRA they did a good job but the same can't be said for the car carreir truck drivers who were supposed to get it back to Perth.
They just couldn't be bothered to unload the bottom deck and put it up top as it had a spare wheel on the roof and a camper trailer hitched to the back.
In the end it took nearly 3 weeks to get back but LR can't be blamed for that because as soon as I let them know there were problens they moved to fix it.
Alan.

So correct me if I'm wrong. As I have Land Rover Assist as part of the warranty, I do not require any additional Car Breakdown insurance when I go on holiday to France as the Puma will be covered for breakdown, repair and repatriation if necessary.

My car insurance has foreign cover for accident's etc.

Glad to hear they offer a good service overseas. Thumbs Up

Land Rover assist covers you for european travel, countrys covered are listed in the documentation from Land rover assist. All I can say is that they are very professional and the best cover I have ever experienced. A big thank you for the way they have treated me during my recent breakdown in Poland,. John

I have bought the car in Germany as it was much cheaper. I am living in Poland and do not speak German.
When called Polish LR assistance they refused to help, they even have not provided me with phone numbers. Luckily they speak perfectly English in Germany, and recovery car came half an hour after the call Very Happy Janusz

Unfortunately you can't get LR assist unless you're under warranty. That means that when the warranty expires, you have to extend (much £££ for little value) or find another provider Big Cry

I'd have signed up for LR assist in a heartbeat if they had a stand-alone option. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
+ New Defender 110 First Edition

Things may have changed since I had the Td5. When the original 3 year warranty was running out LRA contacted me with an offer of a 1 year extension for around 90 or 100 bucks.
This covered the recovery but not the broken part and they guaranteed to recover you from where ever you were.
Oz is a big place and you can be many many miles from a dealer especially now they've axed virtually all country dealers/agents.
In 2007 when we had the breakdown it was back to Perth a 1000 plus kays away or on to Karratha some 500 further North.
Thankfully we chose Perth as it took as I've said nearly 3 weeks to get it back to Perth. If we'd chosen Karratha we would have been sitting in a motel and probably hired a car while waiting waiting waiting for the vehcile to be delivered to the then dealer.
I doubt if LRA would have picked up the huge cost of that.
I won't buy another new vehicle from Land Rover until they do something to improve service out of the metro areas because although it may come as a suprise to them, some of us actually like to get out and about in to remote regions.
Why do I still read and contribute to LR forums? Don't ask me I haven't the faintest idea! Confused
AlanH.

Hi,

I called LR Assist back in 2007 when I took my new puma 110 to France. Just as I was arriving in Portsmouth for the ferry I had a judder which I thought may be discs ....

Got on to the ferry, had a beer, went to sleep and left it till the morning.

It was still there ( no Censored lol ) so I called LR aasist who offered to send a truck out but I asked for a dealer on route to look at it as it was drivable and only noticable over 55 / 60 mph.

They gave me the details of a dealer in Nantes and called to tell them I would call in.

I arrived and got met by the service manager, free coffee and snacks whilst they looked at it straight away and went for a test drive me where they confirmed my guess of warped discs.

Safe to use and got the discs changed when I got back. John
