that means the difflock is engaged, some might say to read the manual as driving around with it engaged will cause serious damage if driving on tarmac, move the little gearstick to the right!

If you have driven like that you may well of caused some wind-up, apply the t-brake and jack up a front wheel, as the tyre looses traction it shall spin slightly (note it will only spin if there is sufficient wind-up, normal use the wheel should remain still). 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Probably no need to jack up a wheel to undo eventual wind-up. Was all very well explained by Glyn in his below.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

When that yellow light is lit there is a positive connection between the front and rear axles. For normal road use the light should be unlit / off / not showing.
Did the vehicle come with its handbook - if so may I respectfully suggest that you read it soon. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. jangtm76,
Welcome to the joys of landrover ownership and to the forum! As the others have said , the light on the speedo should not be on for 'normal' onroad driving, so you should move the short lever to the right and into its normal position. If the light does not go off, then slowly drive in reverse and move the steering wheel from full left to full right and it should go out. As you are new to Defenders and landrover in general, may I suggest that you have a chat to your local landrover dealer and see if there are any offroad courses in the area that have the ability to show you what a remarkable vehicle you have bought.. in the UK we have landrover experience and they are able to take you through basic off road driving techniques and show you the limitations of your vehicle, how to use the various gears and give you confidence in how to use the defender in anger... maybe see if any of our French members are nearby to meet up with you and go over the finer points - with a glass of wine or two.. just a thought Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 |

So now we've learnt when the diff-lock should be off, now when it should be on:
Basically any time you're not a sealed road. |
