Off topic Off Topic but as a side note, in these modern days of manufacturing, I am quite convinced that where it's build has pretty much nothing to do with reliability, it's the build process and QA that counts (ie not who builds it, but how it's built, and Japanese cars are not exempt of problems either, see Toyota and their software bug for an example...). “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

The A45 does sound good, I though being a small engine (for an AMG car and no vCool it would be a bit tame...

It isn't,

Friend RS3 has launch control, also Rapid... I just prefer Merce having had most of the range (not AMG versions mine)

I understand probably 10 a penny where you are, so badge it up A180Cdi and have some fun Smile

nice thread ... I'd be looking at the new ford focus RS ... 4 wheel drive, blistering performance, wallet friendly and will become one of the all time greats ... saw one with Eric at the Geneva motor show ...simply stunning

or for something new but a little less "EEEKKK" - the new Audi Q2 could be worth looking at

You're quite right. However, I think Mazda are the least tarnished Japanese brand. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Moot point however as Mrs Gren has just got back and decided the new Audi TTS is for her. It changes like the weather. Big Cry

I have suggested that there is almost not difference between the TTS and the straight TT with S-LIne package bar silver mirror caps and an engine tune. So she has warmed to the idea of buying a 10k cheaper TT, fully loaded with s-line gubbins, getting it remapped and spending the difference on a Rolex!! Not sure how the accountant will sign that off.... Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

As an addendum, was just reading up some facts, figures and reviews on the TT and came across this stat.

'...he TTS still weighs in at an acceptably trim 1385kg (the 2.0 TFSI weighs 1230 kilos)....'

Given they are the same car, with the same engine and with the same trim, I wonder where the extra 155kg weight comes from? That's two grown adults. Different suspension? If so (and one assume better) you'd expect it to be lighter. Brake calipers and discs might be, but would that account for 150kgs? Perhaps the wheels, as they are 2" larger. Or perhaps the base TFSI doesn't include the body trim? Maybe all the suggestions combined?

But save the larger wheels and mirror caps, you can't tell the difference between the two. So at 10k difference a lighter TT retuned for just 1000 but to similar BHP, seems like a winner to me!! Monsieur Le Grenadier

Mrs Grenadier (for it is she....), is in the market for a new motor vehicle. <snip>
As a point of note, she is only small so prefers manageable compact cars. We're looking for 5-door, so usable with visiting friends, but she must have 4WD (because of where we live), <snip>
Before anyone says it, whilst the Golf R meets most of the criteria and is apparently a blast to drive, she hates the interior. <snip>

Ok. So assuming the two door, two wheel drive convertible you want isn't a realistic option Laughing you're into a narrower window. I personally adore this car, but it won't be cheap when it lands:

But, being realistic:

BMW 120d Xdrive Hatch? Diesel economy, BMW build, not a Golf.

Grenadier, A few years ago we bought a new C63 P.P., so have a connection with AMG. When Wifey wanted a nice car for herself, there were only two choices, the AMG A45, or an Audi S3. At the time there was a 12 month wait for the A45, but the chap that sold us our C63 had a cancelled order, so we could get one immediately.
Anyway, after Wifey drove the S3, she didn't even want to drive the A45, she just loved the S3. But out of courtesy, we had to speak to our AMG guy & drive the A45, which we did. Wifey was much more comfortable in the S3.
There is no doubt that the A45 is a faster car than the S3, BUT NOT BY MUCH. The A45 is a much harder drive, seats are harder to access, (big bolsters), all of which are good, but for Wifey's everydayer, the S3 was a much more "relaxed" ride, beautifully finished, and more performance than Wifey will ever need. She bought the hatch with 6 speed STronic transmission (paddles etc) performance pack (better seats, BIG Bang & Olufsen Sound system) & Panoramic sunroof.
Wifey's now done 21,000ks & the car's been perfect. BIG smile on wifey's face every time she drives it!
The RS3 wasn't available when we bought the S3, so you could also drive that, BUT, the difference is not that great for everyday driving, and there are those that say, that the S3 is a better balanced car & better value for money.
Anyway, it's your "Wifey's Choice", she's gotta drive 'em both!!
Hope this is some help. Pickles.

We're off to the shops now, LR, Merc and Audi all in a row. 1st place is currently the TT, but that could all change once she's been in them. Pickles, based on reviews I feel the same between the Audi and A45 practically speaking, especially ride given where we are. Arguably the TT is less practical, but easier day to day. And with a remap giving it 300bhp in a 1230kg car, that's hard to argue against. Also, the TT is newer than the S3, with much better MMI.

As far as the Alfa is concerned PB, that's stunning. Would have to check if they do a Clverleaf as that's the only 4x4 variants for Alfa from my recollection....nice though, ta Thumbs Up

Edit. It is a Quadrifoglio... Bow down Gorgeous. Mrs Gren already vetoed because it's a saloon and quote 'I'm fed up choosing....' Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

'm an Audi TT fan myself BUT, don't forget it'll be the pre-2006 Type 8N which will become the collectible one to hold its value. What price a 3.2 V6?

I'd stiill be seriously looking at the S3 Hatch over the TT.
Not really familiar with the TT, obviously its a 2 door (which We didn't want), but I thought the S3 had more power? What is the power/torque of the TT?
Anyway, sit yourselves into an S3 Hatch & drive it,...tell me what you think compared to a TT.
Pickles.

Just so we are clear about this, we are talking the TT that is a Golf with a less useful body and seat config? The thing that looks like a slightly flatter Beetle? Laughing New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info

Done. Mrs Gren has gone for the TT. The 230bhp, tfsi with S-line throughout. In answer to various questions, vis a vis the S3, the 230bhp is with a 1230kg weight, whereas the S3 is almost 200kgs heavier. With the s-tronic, even in basic TT guise it shifts, and with a lower seat position and (squashed beetle) height feels faster and more than enough to keep Mrs Gren happy. I'll probably get an ABT remap to 310hp so it'll exceed the S3. But we drove the S3 as well and the TT 'feels' faster. Given (ProjectBlue) we don't need four doors, and the TT is far nicer than the Golf inside (getting full leather), Bang and Olufsen, etc. more than happy!!! Lastlay it's the latest gen, just over a year old. With a new A4 this year, the A3 may be up for a change next year, so latest models always preferred Thumbs Up

Also, went to LR to confirm whether an Evoque was an option and Mrs Gren accepted she has some racing DNA, so that was a no. But a worthwhile trip nonetheless as

A. I bought a HUE mug
B. I decided I am going to buy an F-Type Coupe with AWD
C. That the Stratos Grey of the model I saw will work well on my DC
D. That paint jobs at this dealership are cheaper than Urban. France cheaper than the UK???? Shocked

Anyway, found a fully loaded TT in Germany, and have emailed, so hopefully will pick it up next week. Then a trip to ABT Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier
