ABS/TC
Ok, looking into buying a new Defender Hard Top and was wondering if it would be worth getting the ABS/TC option fitted or not? Any thoughts? Would be left hand drive for Europe so the option is around 1200 euros I think.

Would prob. fit an ARB diff. lock in the rear later anyway so traction control doesn't seem to be so essential. ABS I have mixed feelings about. Could be useful but then again not essential, especially as, where I am, I have noticed that (in cars) it often struggles anyway (snow, ice etc).

Thoughts would be appreciated!

ABS/TC - on a wet slippery road, ABS could save you €1200 avoiding a tree/wall/another car .. none of us are perfect drivers - personally I'd go for it.

Whereabouts in Europe are you ?

if you are in the cold and snow alot (80% of mileage) and on std rubber ie non studded i wouldnt bother. sometimes its better to have the snow pile up in front of a sliding wheel to aid your stopping. but with no ABS you wouldnt have steering.

if you run studded tyres then i would have it yes.

If you are fitting a rear locker then have a look at the other TC/locker debates/threads on here. Cheers

my experience :
1st ! just drive defensively!

2nd : I got General Grabbers
they are known for bad grip(rain) and good miles/value

3.) itīs very true that ABS on the defender and in general : prolongs the stopping distance.

itīs been 2 times already that I just turned off the engine in an emergency to lock them up.

One time i pulled the Handbrake to lock the wheels , got it into skid locking 4 wheels and sliding Sideways .
this was on a T Juction at 30km/h on black ice : ABS just intervened but and the truck would not stop.
After the T section was a 1.2m deep canal .

when I pulled the handbrake , the truck rotated 90° : so i was going side ways . at the canal.
just before the canal , my 2 side wheels plowed in the (luckily) unfrozen ground : Stopping the truck , mere inches away... I almost soiled myself !

If i didnt pulled the handbrake , I would have definitely drove into there with my abs.

4th) my experience on dry roads is good, especially at higher speeds .

5th) TC are electronic lockers and stop spinning wheels
it really helps off road ! Discovery 4 SDV6 Landmark

The way I look at it is pro's and con's. If I were to buy again I would opt for them. The ABS has saved me more times than hindered me and same wirth the TC... I have only not liked it on one occasion, the rest of the time it has kicked in it has been helpfull.

If it is black Ice it wouldn't make a difference if you had ABS or not. One of my previous cars didn't have ABS and whilst turning around a corner I noticed a car with it's brake lights on with the only junction near me (200m up the road). I locked up and slid the 200m and only missed the other car because I managed to get one wheel on the verge where there was a little grip.

And if you dont want to use it for some reason then you only have to press the pedal 10 times before cranking the engine and it goes off, if you dont have it fitted you cant turn it on!

Works up to 2010MY for sure, think they have changed from wabco to bosch (think its bosch?) for the 2011MY so not had chance to try it out yet on the newer system.

Really? On snow perhaps. but I would like to see definitive (not anecdotal) evidence of any other situation where ABS prolongs stopping distance.

I seem to remember something about going down very steep muddy hills that it can cause some problems too with the ABS. Think LRO picked up on it when the Defender first got ABS/TC.

Need more practice.... you shouldn't need to yse your brakes in the snow, all about slow accelerating and very sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow engine braking with maybe the slightest brake pedal to slow and use brakes to do the final stop.
