300TDI getting warm too easily....
Hi all.

I have a 300tdi that is a little prone to getting warm. Partly i know this is down to my setup (auto cooler and ic in the way of rad)

its a 300tdi auto in a 110 with roof rack, full cage etc, so heavy and loaded so to speak.

The engine is a full rebuild from a chap based in clevedon, but he did miss a few bits when he did the rebuild, so i now have to question everything. no overheating prior to rebuild, but no indication of any issues such as head gasket etc.

When it came back from rebuild it was way down on power, and some research found that lots of restoration places turn the pump down a little to wear it in nicer) I did a slight pump tweak and that resolved those issues after i did over 1000 miles.

I am interested in fitting an 82c stat, as it currently has the 88c stat, and my electric fan kicks in at the same time making for a non ideal setup. on a long hill she can reach 100 and i don't like that. at the same time, when simply reversing after a drive the fan kicks in and she tries to go to 95 sometimes.

i have silicone hoses, a new expansion bottle and cap (the expansion bottle still makes noise once turned off but she uses no water).

I am wondering about whether the stat even works, or if the hole is at the top of the stat. i also read that the hosuing can corrode internally and allow a constant bypass. The engine prior to rebuild had all the core plugs fail or near fail due to corrosion... possibly related?

The best bet would be remove the thermostat and run like that a few times to see if that is a problem, failing that there is a thin pipe that comes off the header tank, it runs to the thermostat housing and the radiator, I have seen overheating problems when this is blocked. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

I can get her to 100c on a long climb, but I thought they should run at 90, and always try to keep under 100?

Assuming I have that wrong, what's the max, ideal etc?

I'm just looking into why mine seems to be running hot. On a run mine sits just under the red.

I'm going to try a new sensor and then take the stat out. Then I think it will have to be a new rad.

If it's a tdi it will need a stat in it so you'll need to jam it open as opposed to

mine runs at 72deg when warm, on a hot day that can climb to 76deg. that is actual head temp though not water temp! i have no idea what the water temp is!! My 109 thread

with a water temp like that you must have one of only a few 200/300's with a warm heater! 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Well I did an 8 mile drive today at mixed speeds and the needle sat bang on 90c. When I stopped I checked the top and bottom rad hoses. There both hot i can touch them for about 5 seconds the bottom hose that goes to the header tank is stone cold. I'm leaning towards it needing a new rad. And the heater is red hot. Doesn't help that the adjuster needs adjusting. It's either hot or cold.

You've lost me. 88-90degC is exactly where you want it to be running. Overcooling is not good for an engine you certainly don't want it running any cooler than 82degC.

IIRC 88C is the benchmark usually.
I've noticed on mine since coolant change a slight drop in running temp which is good, but only a tiny drop.

But mine is a 2.4, I assume they should all be similar though.

My previous post showed gauge just in the red, and it will sit there on a go run. Today was a short run at lowish speeds. It was more finding that the bottom hose was as hot as the top hose. I expected a noticeable difference between the two.
