Wondering if anyone would care to share their routes exploring the west of Scotland camping style. We have two weeks in summer and taking 3 kids with us. Happy to rough camp as it sounds like there are some lovely places away from the crowds! 1951 80" S1 2.0

Not sure how north you want to go but definitely take in Glencoe, Red Squirrel Campsite is good with the Clachaig Inn just up the road.

You cannot miss Applecross, also a good campsite with a lovely seafood restaurant nearby.

Clachtoll Beach Campsite is great with stunning views set on a beautiful beach, this is in Lochinver, a long way but worth it.

Scotland Trip
We are doing the same thing, with three kids, in a 110.

I am still planning the route, but first stop will be Loch Lomond then up to Skye. Depending on the weather we may head over to Harris, but if it is bad then back to the mainland and then further north on the west coast.

There is a lot of information on the visit Scotland website, but it is very tourist oriented. We, like you, are looking for some wild camping mixed in with some normal campsites. We will be spending about two weeks up there, so still have a lot of planing to do. We are all water sports oriented, but want to hit the lesser known and visited parts - maybe where only Defenders can get to.

Will let you know once I have got the itinerary down to something achievable. My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender.

Bit difficult with kids but the other year we did Aberdeen all the way round to Fort William and up the to Inverness. All we did was look at the map and go right we want to be there tomorrow night. Cause we were in the Disco and it was Jan / Feb we staid in hotels but doing it in summer means more daylight and more choice. I would say don't follow ANY tourist guides or web pages as that's what everyone else does . Do the summer then do it in winter you will be amazed the difference and personally the best time to go when your driving axle deep + in fresh untouched snow and having wild deer less than 20yards from you

Oh yes Big Cry

Avon do a moisturiser, Skin so Soft dry oil spray pine fresh, which is great keeping them at bay. It was available in some local shops when we were up there. Any exposed skin is a target for them.

Keep to the coast to try and avoid the midges.

Recommend Big Sands at Gairloch for camping and beach. Plenty of wet weather options here also.

This website is worth a look for ideas http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/
