Neither of you were tempted by an X5 or X6, then?

to join this OT conversation, i have only owned 1 BMW. it was an old 2002 Touring. loved it, especially the LSD Smile

onto more modern BMs i have been lucky enough to drive many powerful cars and IMHO there are 2 cars that stand out for real speed. the M5 and the RS6.

we now have the 2 LRs and a 9-3 Conv for warm weather cruising.

i think if i had to choose my own personal 'fleet' i would end up with about 15 vehicles Confused

now theres an idea for a thread.....list your perfect fleet and keep it to a max of 5 vehicl!es

PS - i seem to be living in the 90 BM52

TC - out of interest what did you got from a tank in the M5 on a reasonable run?

There is no such thing as a reasonable run Laughing

It went back never having its mpg count reset and it showed 17.2. Essentially you could get anywhere between 150 and 250 miles out of a full 70 litre tank.

5 litre V10 - If you are in anyway shape or form worried about fuel costs or are on a budget, don't even consider it. I spent the first months of ownership trying to balance economy and fun, managing c. 19mpg; I had a quiet word with myself and chucked that ethos out the window. From then on in I got little better than 12mpg....or 185 miles a tank Shocked

My record, and yes, I kept the two reciepts with dates and times, was 111 miles or 7.2 to the galloon between fills Very Happy

By contrast, driving the M3 with the same ethos, I got a flat average of 23mpg......just as much fun as an M5 on the twisty stuff but the second the road straightens a little and you pop some brave pills......

I think that confirms it for me - I simply couldn't live with filing up 4 or 5 times each way for a trip to the alps, the 330 will get there and just need a top up about 2/3rds in.

Now should I get a 535D and chip it or perhaps an S4?

My landy (only 3k on the clock so might not be properly run in yet) will get me between 300 and 350 before she bings with at least 10l left in the tank. Just done a run down to Padstow from Winchester and she drunk at about 25MPG, I'm happy with that.

Twisted Evil 535D Touring Arived on Monday!!! Twisted Evil
M Sport with most toys on board, late facelift model with latest engine, still needs a chip IMO.

Loving the sports gearbox though, I reckon it is as quick as the S4 DSG box but soooo much creamier with that massive surge of torque

Now where is DMS Whistle

I'd make a very good effort to join this if it happens. I'm happy to help arrange things, but as I've not been there myself I may be of limited use Whistle But I'm willing! Laughing Simon

Some surprisingly quick cars owned by a lot of us, bearing in mind we dawdle round in Defenders now! After a run of 911's, including a rather spicey Turbo, I bought a Maserarti 4200. It drank fuel at a similar rate to the M5 by the sound of it. One brisk Sunday morning run saw somewhere between 7 and 8 mpg over about an hour of driving. Best fuel I ever put in that car Thumbs Up

I now get as much fun (perhaps more fun?) from my Defender on a good bit of green lane/ off road weekend. Hope I'll always have a Defender now... Timeless. And other road users are definitely more friendly to me in this than in any other car I've had. Defender all the way now Wink Simon
