United Kingdom 1999 Defender 110 Td5 SW Caledonian Blue
Door catches
On the passenger side door there is a plastic cover/roller over the part of the catch that strikes the door catch, whereas on the drivers side there is not.

Should there be? and what's its purpose? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Wales 2007 Defender 90 Other CSW Trident Green
Both driver and passenger side door catches have the white roller fitted on the TDCi, however, on the 200Tdi the roller on the catch is black. looks like the roller thing is made of nylon.. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

On my 300TDi I had the driver side with no bush on the striker (assuming this is the part you mean?) and the latch had actually created a cut out through the metal part of the striker as it had been used be the previous owner who obviously didn't care Evil or Very Mad

The passenger side had the same but a tiny sliver left of the bush (soon broke) but with the same groove where the door had just been slammed through the striker by the previous owner. Some peoples attitude towards car care truly baffles me! Banging Head

I've replaced both with new strikers (with white bushes/rollers) included and both doors shut much better. I believe their purpose is to protect the door catch from being damaged when closing the door onto the striker plate. Break the cheap plastic bit and replace the striker for a few quid instead of the entire latching mechanism. Thumbs Up

The sleeve thingy is intended to reduce the likelyhood of the door rattling ( Rolling with laughter ) and to prevent wear in the other parts by being a sort of sacrificial thing. Various colours have been used over the years but the colour is of no significance.

What you will find is that as the plastic sleeve wears it becomes increasingly difficult to close the door (it latches onto its anti-burst catch rather than fully shut). If you rotate the plastic sleeve through 180 degrees it will shut properly again, but only for a while.

Most aftermarket strikers don't have the sleeve, and work much better and for longer as a result.

It is possible when they wear to adjust the striker again, but if the sleev then rotates back to an unworn orientation you will have trouble shutting the door again!

All in all it isn't one of the greatest design features of the Defender.

I have ordered a new door catch with the added white plastic roller and new screws.
This might explain why the drivers door is always a PITA to close as there is no roller 1999 Defender TD5 110

When mine wore out I bought a set of "X-Trouser" strikers from X Eng (now sold via Foundry 4x4) specifically because they didn't have the plastic sleeve!

Is there supposed to be an equivalent on the back door? Mine needs a firm shove to close, too soft and it doesn't fully close, too hard and it bounces back and doesn't fully close.

Good man for pointing this out excossack - just noticed I have one on the drivers but not on the passenger!

Just ordered a bearmach pair for under a tenner.

Saving up for the X-eng, but in the meantime I should shortly be able to close the passenger door a little easier! Thumbs Up

New striker plate fitted to the passenger side in about 3 minutes and what a difference. No more struggling and now a much more firm 'clunk.'

I have the x-eng ones and dont seem worth the money. Still wreck pretty much every pair of trousers on them and the allen key headed bolt in the end is always coming loose.

Having said all that, I haven't had the trouser problem (ooh er missus), but I have had the seat belt and closing issues.

I've hopefully resolved at least one Thumbs Up

Replaced the drivers side door catch and I can now shut the door without having to slam the door. 1999 Defender TD5 110
