Saw a very nice 15plate with black standard Boost wheels yesterday. Have to say they looked very much better than I thought they would. I personally prefer them to the Sawtooth wheel. I'd keep the boost wheels and get them painted.

That said, my ultimate OEM choice is the Dual Finish / SVX wheel. And they look even better in black! Think that's what I may be going for,

This thread has now convinced me to go down the route of black boosts, but the question now is do I have them painted or powder coated? What are pros and cons of either?

Think it depends upon whether you ask a painter or a powder-coater!

With powder coating you remove all of the existing finish and get back to aluminium. As soon as the aluminium is exposed to the elements it starts oxidising so it should be zinc coated straight away to halt the process. Leaving wheels hanging around before powder coating can cause problems. Quality control is more critical.

I'd personally paint them but then I've probably been speaking to too many painters!

A good powder coater will wipe the floor with a good painter. In other words, powder coating is best.Take no notice of factory finish powder coating,Landrover couldn't care less (so it goes to the lowest bidder),as long as it gets out of the factory gate. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Thanks for the replies, will probably go with powder coating if I can find a decent outfit nearby. Now what about a little more more power and comfortable suspension options Very Happy Looks like being a costly few months ahead.

Have a look at this link. It explains the potential problems associated with powder coating:

The downside with powder coating is if you kerb or catch the wheel you can't re-powdercoat the small chip, it has to be stripped and powder coated again where as if it's painted it can be blown in easier. Ray

Im about to screw your brain lol, I have Sawtooths at the moment. But I also run Winter tyres. So my plan is Sawtooths with my Continentals Cross Tracks and then get a set of BOOSTS powder coated black and fit my Nokian winter tyres to them as I really do like both. That or I might get some Wolf wheels ( Not Blindos) and get them done black.

Black Boosts look great on a Santorini, I personally have Boosts but its a 50/50 with the Sawtooths. Both look great and i much prefer them in the black finish.

First of all Lambley, I never thanked you for your reply. Bow down

I'm still facing a similar dilemma, but between STs and Bowlers. The list for my new beast, as an when it is sourced, is long and into five figures, but even then I balk at paying double for an 18" Bowler over any equivalent 18" wheel. If I happen to find a better priced DC then I will bite the bullet. But if I stay where I am, the idea of losing a grand of cash to throw at other stuff pains me.

But my point is that I am liking the profile of the 18" wheel/tyre combo a lot. More wheel, less tyre. so my current wheel set up on my list is 18" STs in Black shod with Cooper ST Maxx. Likely get them from Urban.

Here's a picture of them on a tasty SW. Thumbs Up
