Old wives tale and is not a legal prerequisite. Black ink is often used and is at times asked for as it will always give a good contrast against white or velum coloured paper. However the colour of ink has no legal validation over any other colour.

Sometimes it is requested that black ink is used when a document is to be copied or scanned into a computer but again that is only due to contrast and for no other reason. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

If you go to India they insist on signing in Blue ink.

Mine was signed in blood from a shotgun wound to the leg suffered while trying to make a run for it. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Another confirmation of "no" from me.

One of the reasons they always were is that "Registrar's Ink" was/is made using iron gall as pigment which is pretty permanent and actually eats into the fibres of the paper, it's not recommended for use in anything but a dedicated pen as it is nasty stuff. The colour fades slightly brown over the years, for exactly the same reason as the metal skeletons of our Defenders. I wonder if old documents ought to be varnished with Dinitrol...?

Absolutely NOT. With an annual petty cash budget of 7.5 million euro (some things you don't write cheques for) I know a thing or two about contracts. As b/w photocopies became more and more indistinguishable from the originals, I was instructed to sign them (and initial/date each page, of course) in blue ink rather than black.
