I own/run a defender and disco 3, the defender has leaked since it was built and all I do about it is notice a wet rubber mat, my d3 developed a leak and this resulted in pax seat out, roof lining off, main fuse board out, rewiring of central locking, running a dehumidifier for a week to dry out the upto 3 inches of carpet/insulation and it was all due to a perished bit of rubber.
That being said I love both of them, the disco is the long distance/ travel toy and the defender is for everything else, running costs are dependent on the one you buy disco or defender as we all know some like to have more attention than others. My disco in 3/4yrs has had one new hub and one sunroof drain elbow that's it (not counting optional mods ) My defender in 1-1/2yrs has had one water pump, new yokes all round, new bulkhead (knew this was needed at purchase) and has no fuel sender so will oneday replace that. One point to note for d3 ownership is have a good indie because some jobs are easier to pay people to do. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html 90 V8 - Maggie http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42564.html 110 TD5 - Buggsy http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59029.html 52HG25 lightweight https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72342.html D3 Hse - Fiona Capri 2l S - Anna Think I might have a problem............ |

My money would be on the Defender being far cheaper to run. Mine costs me £0.19 per mile, that includes everything and is with me doing all the work. While I am sure I could do most of what would be required on a D3/4 there are more things that require specialist equipment and the part prices are dearer.
The Discovery is a nice vehicle for sure but it's not the same. If you like driving your Defender then doing 26k a year won't be a problem, don't be a wimp! I have done 27k in the last year without any issues as have I am sure many others. |

I think it is in the lap of the gods. I've had a D3 and a D4 and both were brilliant when working, but they didn't do that often enough. They were both main dealer vehicles with fsh and maintained to the book. But they cost a fortune to maintain even using an independent - bad luck? However you can drive a Disco to the moon and get out feeling as fit as a fiddle, not the same with a 110. I've never been let down by a Defender, and never had a hideous repair bill - good luck? MPG won't be miles apart so it comes down to whether the Solihull gods have smiled on your particular vehicle!

Thanks for the comments guys keep em coming all interesting reading.
I do 26k a year in my 200tdi and I love it to pieces and would not change it for the world. She does a steady 32pmg on cheap Asda fuel and I only have to fill up every 5 days (yes I have used over 640l of diesel since Jan 1st ) but when comparing running costs with my co workers it is obviously much more expensive. But then it always would be against a Ford Fiesta ecoboost and a Vauxhall omega and a Mitsubishi phev. But I would never want any of them. So I was thinking if I absolutely had to swap my Defender for something else, what would it be? I know I could not afford a Ford F250 and it would probably ruin my life so that was passed up on, I would have a defender 130 but that is cheating because its still a Defender, the only other vehicles which I liked enough to consider buying were ether Disco 3/4 or very possibly a 3.2 Ford Ranger but I have no experience in one and forgot that option when I filled this thing out It is all completely blue sky thinking I don't have the money for any vehicle changes at the moment, it was just a discussion to see what people thought between models because all the published "facts and running costs" are so doctored you can never believe them so best to ask people who have got one for there thoughts. Gents
By comparison Landies are an expensive addiction. Mine have cost..... D2 31 mpg FL2 32mpg D3 29mpg RRS 24mpg 110 30mpg D4 29mpg As for on wards costs don't really know, they were all fairly newish, but I bailed on the D3 when she started to clunk a bit in the corners......by far the best, cost wise was the D2, she was at 75K when I got her and I shoved 80K into her at the cost of a water pump and a rear door lock plus regular servicing using 50 quid eBay service kits....now I think of it she may be one of my faves from the above list. I didn't include the lightweight in the Above list, as after my tuning efforts she was returning about 11mpg! If you wanna roll about in a cool ride, you've got to pay the tally man, having said that l drive a 1 L fiesta about during the week as these micro cars can get close to paying for themselves in landrover fuel saved, depending on mileage Wes Oh woe, oh woe My crusty old landrover, It will not go. |

I have both. I do 50 miles a day on mostly motorway.
the disco is far more fuel efficient and can manage at 70 better than the defender can at 60 on a disco to box. the disco costs a arm and a leg when it goes wrong, I joke every repair is £600. where as the defender is pennies and I do it myself. but the defender is far less reliable, and the fuel pumps etc have given me similar bills to the disco. if it was |
