Cheers Pickles. I went to see a guy recently who I'm going to ask to sort out the engine. At the moment it's running the original stromberg carbs, and some strange set up that vents some of the (possibly fuel rich) exhaust back into the combustion chamber (ever heard of that - apparently it was common on the early V8s?). The latter gives it a funny noise on tick-over that doesn't sound very v8.
So I'm hoping to change the strombergs for better ones, and will do the exhaust at the same time. Fingers crossed! |

Sounds like the Early Detox system you still have fitted, was an emission control pre SU or Injection... I had this fitted to RV8 in 2a Lightweight back in the day...
Your Poor V8 with its detox gubbins and Carb restricture plates you probably only in the region on 85bhp!! Better to put an Elberbrok/Weber kit on or injection Andy Working towards Carry on camping! |

Fantastic build and one I am contemplating, Keswick Green, the best colour IMHO.
Did you get the doors to seal properly in the end? |

This is just what I'm going to do, probably the Weber kit, and like you say, dump all the restrictions. |

Yup, doors were sealing a treat, although now I've fitted the new hood frame this weekend I'm going to have to go through the whole process again. Can't believe the gap in the top of each door corner that'll need a big gob of caulk shaped into it. Bit of an update from the weekend: Before fitting the new frame and canvas, I wanted to take the opportunity to have a good airing in superleggera mode Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge And then to fitting the new canvas... Sailing Tom asked whether I'd considered the heavy duty frame (like he had and PJB has), but I had an original seat belt bar which I wanted to keep attached (for when the frame is off like above), and to save faffing around with all the bolts and seat belt anchorages, I just went for a new land rover spec galvanised frame which should come apart nice and quick. Click image to enlarge Also got the straightforward canvas hood instead of the mohair, nice and simple again, and lots of different ways that you can "wear" it going forward Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Cheers everyone! Ps. Don't worry Pickles, engine and exhaust updates will be coming soon I promise! |

Edelbrock/Holley etc sounds good, but I don't know anything about a "Weber Kit",.....so what carby is that, & what does it look like? (Obviously I know what a Weber is, but I'm just curious to know what sort of Weber & manifold would sit on top of a V8?) Pickles. |

^^
Here's a link to the Weber v Holley dilemma. Weber seems to be better for 4x4s because the float levels are more suited to driving on an incline? http://www.v8tuner.co.uk/faqs.php?id=6 RPI engineering do the "Weber 500 carb kit" aimed at Rover V8s, although their website seems a little out of date. They too seem to suggest the Weber is better for off road applications. I think that the name "weber" is a branding exercise in the UK.... the same kit would be branded Edelbrock elsewhere (hence the Edelbrock stickers in the photos). http://www.v8engines.com/faq-carb.htm |

Looks lovely.
I had an Edelbrock 500 on my 3.9 and I loved the sound but it did occasionally stall on steep inclines off road. I bought a set of off road springs for the needles that were supposed to help, but never got around to fitting them. |

No worries.
Never heard of a Weber 500,...now I have, & it sounds Ok for your use. Holley would be much more well known in Aus, & I was going to suggest a 500,...Edelbrock is of course very well known for manifolds etc. If ya're going to do this, that exhaust will be more important than ever??!! Also, I don't know what sort of use you have in mind for this machine, but if it's predominantly road use, have you considered lowering? Pickles. |

Ha I know I know - exhaust is key! I'll be sure to post some before and after sound clips when its ultimately fitted!! But ... lowering a Defender is sacrilege!! (IMHO) There are other toys for the road |
