Both sides to make sure I got the right side?

Not got wheel off just yet but what ever it is its not oily. Feels like tar / plastic smooth and dry?

I take it you mean each pad on the backplate rather than both sides if each pad?? Thumbs Up

Grease just to the side making contact with pistons.

Inside face of disk looks very discoloured. Pretty sure it ain't brake fluid.

There appears to be slight evidence of leak from end of axle casing but needs further examination.?

Just stop and think about this rationally for a moment.

A leaking caliper seal is usually going to be evident by damp in the area of the pads and caliper itself and perhaps a change in the feel of the pedal when you apply the brakes, there are potentially other symptoms too but let's keep it simple for now.

What else can leak onto the inside of the disc? Well, the hub seal can do that and show as oil on the inside of the disc, caliper and backplate.

With both the above you can also get damp on the inside rim of the wheel too.

Now, is the hub and wheel in question getting hotter than the others in use as this might be suggestive of potential contamination on the disc. How about any strange smells after a run.

As your disc is picking up a pretty copper colour then over indulgence in the Copperslip department may perhaps be the cause. Time on here playing the "what if" game would be better spent jacking up and removing the wheel for a look-see.

But playing "what if" on here seems so addictive doesn't it Wink Steve.

When you jack it up can you spin the wheel and see if the brake is rubbing? What colours the discolouration? Bluey purple colour is overheating, you've probably got a stuck piston if it's that colour. Or is it the same colour as the outboard side?

If it's a messy black, well, complete mess, then its hub grease but you'll be able to see the leak if it's that bad so the diagnosis becomes easy!

I've seen this before. The clue is in your opening sentence. You washed the Defender.
Certain car wash solutions seem to cause really fast light surface corrosion on brake discs, Autoglym being one in particular.
You've then moved the Defender and that is why a bit of it is removed. Go and take it for a run round the block and you"ll find it's all gone.

I tend to agree with this, some wheel cleaners leave quite a residue which looks like this Confused I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

thanks for the thoughts but this isn't due to washing the truck. the 'scrape' marks were there after washing and before moving.

did the same journey this morning and all is good. the marks are still on the disc but as there doesn't appear to be any further wetness I'll just monitor and hopefully have a further look the weekend.

it was thought it might be hub seal but I gather this is most likely to show on just one side of the disc. both sides of the disc are a brownie colour?

took the wheel centre cap out all looks fine there. I think somehow might have been some kind of one off contamination?

looks to me like either friction caused as others have said ie sticking calliper, or some type of lubricant that has got on the pad. I have always been taught that when diagnosing a fault there is a good chance it relates to the last time that part was maintained.

I would therefore recommend revisiting your brake pad change and as others have said it could be some copper grease has got onto the pad, if it has I would recommend changing all the rear pads again, giving the disk a very good clean before refitting the new pads. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

At the cost of new pads might not be a bad idea. Strange thing is the pads were swapped about 12k miles ago and this is (I'm sure) a recent thing?

If the pads are shagged perhaps it would explain the wobble feeling I get sometimes when I brake (although it feels like the front wheels are loose not the back end). got a load of works being done the w/e so lets see where that leaves me.
