Puma engine cuts out when idling or low revs when cold
Evenin all, i'm looking for ideas to resolve an issue with my 2007 defender 90 that is worst when the engine is cold - it cuts out when idling or low revs (e.g. when changing down a gear or braking quickly and slipping clutch). It takes about 10 mins for the engine to warm up, then the problem stops and runs smoothly. Definitely worse on frosty mornings, when its almost impossible to manouver out of my drive as I have to keep the engine above 1500 revs or it dies.

mechanic has replaced EGR valve and temperature sensor to no avail and nothing showing up on diagnostics.

Typically, the problem never shows at the garage as its a 10 min drive away!

Thanks Smile

I've got a similar problem. Does yours hesitate on acceleration sometimes too? If when going from first to second, there's no power for about 2 or 3 seconds, then it pulls like normal?

Mine also hunts at idle

It's fine accelerating, but cuts out when the revs drop and has just started to hunt when cruising when the engine is cold. Currently a frustrating mystery! Getting worse by the day - need some warmer weather!

Guys,

I had a similar issue some time ago: RPMs in idle come down and up and finally the engine cuts. Also with the time the acceleration was also involved.

In our case turn to be the MAF doing erroneus lectures. After change the MAF the problen dissapears 100%

Cheers and good luck Eduardo

There are several - even many - things that could be contributing to this sort of running on a Puma.

The first thing I would do is check whether there are any DTCs stored on the ECU, since if there are it may save a lot of wasted time. In fact, the absence of any stored DTCs may also save wasted time, since if there is none it suggests that the problem is in an area not monitored by the ECU.

Possible causes that spring to mind are the EGR valve, MAF, MAP, or CHT sensors, or a fault with the fuel system. Hunting at idle especially when cold can be caused by a defective VCV or uncalibrated fuel pump.

Thanks for the info. Am I right in thinking the tdci runs off nanocom, same soft wear as the td5?

Nanocom can be used on the TDCi, but requires different software due to the engine ECU and instrument pack being CANbus based.

I see, I'll have to see if there is anyone local with the equipment/soft wear

Thanks, and sorry for hijacking the thread!

Warm weather today for first time in a while and it ran perfectly, so definitely cold related.
