Celebration Series - Insurance problems?
Hi Folks,

New to this site - just bought a new 110 Adventure model which I traded in a 2014 90XS SW for.

I am unable to insure it because all the insurance companies say the DVLA list it as a van. Having investigated this it seems all of the Celebration model are listed as Vans with all the insurance companies unlike the standard Station Wagon models (XS/County etc)

The problem is because it is listed as a Van it cannot be insured on a normal car policy, but when you say it has 7 seats the refuse to quote because this does not match the DVLA description

Have any new Celebration series owners had similar problems? I'm in serious trouble because I cannot insure the car at all! with anyone!

Any help/advice would be appreciated Big Cry

Hello and welcome to the site Smile

We have a really good insurance company as a site sponsor - A-Plan Insurance's Specialist Car division at Thatcham:

http://www.aplan.co.uk/motoring/specialist-vehicle-insurance/2455

01635 874646

They are worth a call/enquiry as they are not your typical "computer says no" insurance company which you seem to be having problems with.

Similar issues came up with the Landmark edition towards the end of last year too:

Newish to this also. Many on here have had the same issue. To keep it simple I went with the LR insurance, extending the free 7 days they offer. After a short discussion they matched other offers but they knew exactly what model they were insuring. I'll look at other possibilities next year. I hope this helps.

Thanks - they were twice as much as expected though. And now even they won't insure me! The dealer listed the car as the Landmark model for the drive-away insurance, but as soon as they got the actual reg once it was listed at DVLA they won't cover me either?

They all want to cover me for a van, and then ask if I have professional indemnity insurance which of course I do not, and as soon as I mention 7 seats they just tell me they cannot quote. It's incredibly annoying and seems a common issue - all because LR didn't register the vehicles correctly with the DVLA. I don;t understand why they don't just sort it out?

Well, we're in the same boat.

The outgoing 90XS was insured with direct Line for about £170. Called to change to Adventure - initially, all sounded ok IF it was listed as a 90xs sw, as the closest match.

When I pushed to clarify the model, the underwriter was called - "we won't insure that model because it has a snorkel and it might be used off road". I replied that the existing 90 was equally suitable for use off road! So, Direct Line policy has been cancelled as we have already sold the 90xs.

Using go compare, If I input a reg from an Adventure already in the system, it states that it is a van and directs me to their van insurance pages... Quotes are £500 upwards, and it's not a van either!

The good news is that site sponsor A Plan will insure the new adventure and they know exactly what it is, but the premium is a bit more than the old xs. This is fair, I suppose, as the Adventure has 150hp and is worth about 50% more too. A bit cheaper than Land rover's own insurance quote offered while arranging the seven day drive away insurance. Current Steeds:

I wrote to DVLA to get them to change the body type to estate and they came back with a half baked refusal telling me LR confirm the defender could be either (I know - that's why I'm saying its one not the other???)

However, LR have written to me to confirm it is incorrectly registered and I'm going to send that letter to DVLA again. I know A-Plan will insure but it's still on the basis of it being a van so I know I'm paying a premium for it.

Will keep you posted how I get on with DVLA - if the car was classed as Estate we wouldn't have any issues getting a standard quote.

As suggested on this site, LV are pretty competitive.

Just insured the Adventure for £208, albeit restricted mileage of 4000. The advantages of being older and having max ncd... Other insurers were £380 and upwards.

The Adventure is described as "2016 Landrover 2.5l (2198cc) Defender 90 Adventure SW TDI (150) Van - (3dr) so it seems to be classed as a van as far as LV are concerned. I couldn't find this option on their drop down list for cars, ended up finding a reg on line and using it, then going back and changing back to my own reg no. Current Steeds:

Some what similar for me this week also, called direct line to swap insurance my my td5 to a newer tdci mentioned the snorkel and boom uninsurable vehicle, she also said when I asked @no we wont insure the adventure model'

Went with A plan but a similar tale, insurance with direct line was £190 new quote cost me £300 glad that A plan weren't morons like Direct line but its not really sunshine and lollipops time, having to double your premium due to a dumb piece of plastic causing such a big issue.

Still Direct line get to lose our other car, house and pet insurance now if other quotes for those are competitive, where we never really shopped around before. 3 Landrovers

I would try l.V insurance when I insured my adventure they found it on their system straight away , alot of others didn't and wanted to list it as a std xs , they were very competitive at 480 as I'm only 25 .

I have to say LV as well. Just insured a Disco 2 4ltr V8 with a 2" lift and winch bumper declared and it added £20 to the overall premium.

They seem very relaxed about mods.

A plan are worth a shout as they are knowledgeable and friendly but have yet to match a price for me though. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

I think this is a far bigger problem than people realise. I have two new Defenders and both listed as LGV on V5. That means they will be banned from the LEZ in the not too distant future when those with 'Estate' are exempt. 1951 80" S1 2.0

have a look here - specifically - Table VEH0120 Licensed vehicles by make and model, Great Britain, quarterly from 1994 (MS Excel Spreadsheet, 21.5MB)

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-...first-time

If only someone their pulled their finger out and sorted it out - there are far too many anomalies, as examples:

1. As well as being registered as Cars, there's Land Rovers registered as Motor Bikes, HGVs, Buses and Others; and

2. By far the largest category of model is listed as "Missing", that's as well as a category called "Unknown Model"; and my favourite "SEFENDER 110 COUNTY" Rolling Eyes

Thought i'd provide an update as my insurance is due for renewal. This STILL isn't sorted out. DVLA have been writing back and forth refusing to change the body type - this is despite a letter from Land Rover themselves saying that it is an Estate. Now DVLA want a certificate of conformity from LR. I'm so annoyed because I'm about to insure again and I've tried quotes all over and everyone is still charging a fortune because they cannot properly recognise the car (thinking it's a van but it has 7 seats - therefore modified)

The Adventure model designation is not the issue, they all know what it is, but they all think I've modified it when I enter the number of seats. LR say they have never had any problem like this before, yet every forum I've seen Adventure owners, almost everyone has had some issue or other?
