Assuming the parts are as cheap as I suspect, do both! No more hassle while the box is split. Also worth checking out the state of the friction plate and flywheel while you're in there.
Are you a DIY person? Had the box out and in in a day with 3 people the other weekend. It was raining too. Car was on the floor, used an engine crane to drop it down. I'd probably do it again if needed, but get the car up on axle stands/ramps and drop it down with a couple of trolley jacks. |

I aspire to be. I think I might have a go at this myself... (thanks for the inspiration) I've got a reasonable selection of tools, but do I need anything specialist? Can I rely on the Haynes manual to guide me through it? |

spigot bearing
£10 bit of brass !!! Needs soaking in oil before fitting, and dries out over time. It will only get worse, and it can start to get stuck in gear. Only way is splitting the box.......... alot of effort and makes sense to do clutch and dual mass flywheel at the same time. Did mine last year, around £600 for a valeo clutch and flywheel, and £300 to fit......... Decided as much as I am capable of doing the job, £300 was money well spent On the drive is a |

So my Valeo 5 peice clutch kit arrived today...
If this is all there is to the release bearing, it's a wonder it lasts as long as it does! Can't wait to see the state of the old one when I finally get it out. And the spiggot, well I guess that's just a spiggot. Bit more reading to do and a few tools etc to get hold of, hoping to tackle it next week sometime. Will update! |

Personally I never change spigot bearings. They just go noisy again in no time. Just stick a blob of moly grease on the existing one and that shuts them up for years.

Pulled it all apart this weekend.
The old release bearing was totally fine, looked pretty much like the new one, span freely, no excessive play or grinding. Spigot also looked like new, just a bit dry. Clutch had a date from '08 printed on it , so would have had less than 50k on it... At this point I started losing the will to live - feeling that all this effort had been a waste of time, I could have gotten away with not doing anything and maybe I should just stop here, grease the spigot and put it all back together, and sell this 5pc clutch kit I bought. After finally getting the flywheel off, this revealed a date from '03 - the year the car was built, so assume this was the original so has almost clocked 100k, so happy again and the job feels worthwhile afterall. That handy little hydraulic press method for removing the spigot didn't work for me, so ended up gently chiselling it to bits with a punch to get it out. So it's all back together, sounding great, although only done the one cold start. Clutch pedal feels great, gear changes much slicker and less notchy. Combine this with the new shocks I put on for the MOT, the car now feels like driving a Ferarri! Well, maybe not.. Also, I used to get a short chirp, or squeal on shutdown, kind of like a slipping fan belt sound, not the same as the whirring I had attributed to the spigot/release bearing. Since putting the new bits on this has stopped, so any suggestions on how this is related? |

I'm looking forward to it coming back, so I can not worry about it!
My message to anyone in the future googling this problem: don't worry about it, they all do it! |
