United Kingdom 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS DCPU Keswick Green
UAZ Hunter
Discussed briefly here:

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic36858....uaz+hunter

but maybe worth a fuller post as a possible Defender replacement for those that will not like what JLR come up with:

"Yes, we love the classic Land Rover. But it turns out the Russians make a great old-school 4x4, too.

Their version is called the UAZ Hunter and was famously used by Eastern Bloc militaries. In typical Soviet style, it's sparse, with few creature comforts save for power steering and a cigarette lighter. But it’s solidly built, with an all-metal body, metal bumper, and options for either a gas or diesel engine. Neither engine has much horsepower (128 horsepower for gas and 113.5 horsepower for diesel), but both make up the the lack of oomph with pretty good gas mileage (29 miles per gallon for diesel and 24.5 miles per gallon for gas).

You would be unable to import one as it doesn't comply with the various EU regulations that are leading to the demise of the Defender.
12 month warranty or 30,000 km on the Hunter ia even worse than Land Rover's warranty!
Still as an alternative to a series vehicle...... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu

We owned one of these out in Mongolia 15 years back.
Bought it brand new from the dealership for 4000 US$.

Drove it across the Gobi Desert. Hit a bump in the middle of nowhere and the heater fell off.
Unfortunately it took the wiring loom with it which proceeded to catch fire and took all of the electrics out Sad
Managed to rewire the import bits (i.e. ignition) fro a roll of wire I'd taken down with me only to find it still wouldn't start.
After poking around a bit found out that we had the 'new' model with an electronic ignition gizmo under the seat which had also been fried.
After about 4 hours some local boys turned up with the ambulance / van style version and towed us back to their tent.
Spent the next 2 days driving around the nomads in the desert with them trying to find someone who had a replacement gizmo.
Eventually found one in a tent stashed away in a tea chest being used as a baby's cot.
Charged us a £5 for it and we were on our way Smile
After this we headed up to the Siberian border where the radiator gave way.
Again some local boys recovered us to the nearest settlement where they got their rocket fuel vodka out.
After they'd sunk a few bottles , the connected their welder up to the local overhead power cables with a couple of crocodile clamps and got to work on it.

Basically, the jeep is the same level of tech as a series 2 landie,
The main problem with the 4 door version is the windows don't open (and it obviously doesn't have aircon).
When its 50degrees in the middle of the gobi this becomes an issue.
Also, none of the door seals work when the car is new so if you open the little window flaps, the car fills up with dust and you can't see!
In hindsight, we should have bought a 30 year old one which had already been fettled....

A couple of interesting features on them however:
1) The radiator had a louvre system which you could shut if it was cold to keep the coolant warmer.
2) There is a tap at the bottom of the radiator so at night you empty all of the coolant out into a bucket and take it into your ger (tent) with you. Refill in the morning and you're away Smile

Would love to see the man clamping his welder to the power lines.

Wonder what they would say about it if caught doing it in the UK? 80" 1948

Can't help thinking that the UAZ left you with some great experiences you wouldn't have had without it?
