TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE
Just sorting out photo's of a couple of my old Landies, well before digital camera's so have scanned them in.

My 1972 S111 SWB 2.25P a day or two after I bought it back in 1986.
Ex Southern Electricity Board, it was quite straight but already quite rotten. Within a year or two much of the chassis had been welded and a BRAND NEW bulkhead fitted (£150 from John Craddock). After that, the modifications began in ernest!

At a pay & play site in Northants, probably 1991-92 shortly before I sold it (and yes, it is a posed shot!).
V8, Salisbury rear axle, strengthened chassis with decent recovery points F&R, front winch, 9.00x16 NATO pattern bargrips, full cage, chequer-plated wingtops (was I the first?), 3-point harnesses etc etc....

This one was taken at the Edge Hill off-road site near Banbury in 1989 (I think). It was actually an event sponsored by the BP Young Drivers club and all the drivers were aged 14-15. The lad driving my LR was only 14 and had to sit on a cushion to see over the dashboard (I am passenger).
This was partway through the vehicles development, the internal hoop, lower supports etc are in place but you can just see the plates on the front-wings and hardtop where the external cage will be bolted to (bent up by a local engineering firm and welded together by myself).

Last one of the S111, also taken at Edge Hill.
I had excellent traction with the 9.00x16 NATO bargrips but that V8 just hated the water. I couldn't open the drivers door (it was up against the edge of the ditch) but in a situation such as that I always ran with a rope attached F&R so a helpful bystander just had to get hold of the rope and passed it to the recovery vehicle (an almost identical S111 SWB V8 also wearing 9.00x16's).

My 101FC at its first off-road outing at Brill (Oxon) after I had completed a 12-month chassis-up rebuild, I think this will be 1993.
Bought direct (you could in those days) it was a delight to drive and fitted with an overdrive surprised more than a few car-drivers as it overtook them on the motorway, fuel consumption suffered though with MPG in single-figures being the norm when driven like that.

Up to it in water again. This time the V8 kept running but I had no traction in the soft mud. Taken at Whaddon (near Milton Keynes) probably in about 1995.
Pulled out backwards by a Lada Niva using the same winch off my S111 which I removed prior to sale.

Last one.
Taken on the way home from the 1997 ARC National in North Wales. I was loosing clutch fluid and made it to my sisters house in Staffordshire by keeping the reservoir topped up while driving (luckily it is located in the cab) but by then it was loosing so much fluid that a recovery was arranged. The spectacle lift really struggled to take the weight of the fully loaded Sankey but it got there in the end and a few hours later we were safely home.

The 101 looks big and of course it is tall but the overall length & width are comparable with a RRC. Where it really wins is in the size of the load-bed, large enough to cope with almost anything.
It is one of those vehicles that you should consider owning if only to get it out of your system, having done a 12-month rebuild I kept mine for about 5-years so it wasn't just a whim, I really got "into" the ownership but having been there would not want another one.

Leaving the oh so wet ARC National in Sussex in 1996, only a short trip around the M25 and then up the M1 to go!
It was after this weekend that I decided to kit the rear out as a rudimentary camper, nothing permanently fixed but it was very effective and saved setting up a tent when the weather was awful.

The biggest problem when off-roading an unladen 101, stiff suspension resulting in no articulation.
This was at a RTV run by my ARC club, the vehicle performed very well until I tried to get through a gate that had been set up for leafers & 90's, the 101 was just a tad too wide to make it.
The answer to the suspension problem? A few sacks of sand in the back (can't remember how much but it was a few hundredweight) and the result was supple suspension and decent articulation!

Interesting to read about your motors, but are you sure the SWB was ex-SEB? *WD was a Warwickshire reg, and I would have expected side indicator lamps on an SEB vehicle of that age. Or is it a private reg? I have four ex-SEB trucks. Twisted Evil 2011 110 USW
