HI,
Can anyone recommend a manufacturer and supplier for the above, both to be fitted together so guard needs to be compatible with receiver. Thanks, Steve  Defender 90 TD5 Station Wagon

Stevie D, Devon 4x4 sell the 2" receiver, I have one at each end of mine for towing and shunting, they work great!! D44 also stock a wide range of other underbody protection, so they should serve you well!

Safari Equip,
 to deal with, no instructions, and some of the bolts will be missing,

The Devon 4x4 2" receiver is about £200 and is a Terrafirma one
The alloy tank guard is a Mantac one and cost £186 Are they compatible? No idea check carefully. The Southdown tank has a detachable tow packet which is interchangeable with a recovery eye. Not sure that they do one for a TD5 90. Check with Southdown direct first The Safari Equip 2" rear receiver is about £144 which includes a drop plate. Recovery billet is about £48 Their tank guard is about £90 Now since these items fit to chassis it is important that you ensure that they are all compatible. If you like I can check about the compatibility with the manufacturer for you if you like. Brendan |

Actually there are two bosses Adrian and Julian. Manager is Tom who normally answers the phone. They are close to where we live which helps us

Steve, have no idea. As pointed out these in general are not type approved. However I have been told that it is possible to have tow bars singularly type approved. Have been told of a local guy who does it. Will investigate further.
Load rating? I do not know. Can't see it failing on all the bolts so it would be double shear strength of the 10 or 12mm pin. Should be a straight forward calculation once pin diameter is know. My list of jobs to do is expanding

Had a reply from Southdown, as per their web site they do not make a TD5 90 tank guard/tow pack and have no intention to do so.

Have so far ordered the tank guard from Safari equip and some bumperettes.
Tom at safari would not confirm that their receiver could be used for towing only sold for recovery. So not sure why it's sold with a drop plate 
Trying to find out whether the Terrafirma (extreme) or the Devon 4x4 ones are rated as they are sold as tow bars. Steve Defender 90 TD5 Station Wagon

The reason why they will not say it is suitable for towing is that it is not type approved.
IF you decide to fit a tow ball to the drop plate that is your decision If you read the Devon site carefully, the rear receiver hitch does come under the towing section. However they talk about removing the Land Rover tow bar and replacing it with a 2" receiver. They (in my opinion deliberately) do not mention towing with it as they are not type approved. Someone on here reminded me about type approval.
What is type approval? Tow bars /couplings 3. What is a type approved tow bar? A type approved tow bar is a tow bar which has been approved to Community Directive 94/20EEC. 4. What are the requirements to fit a type approved tow bar? If you wish to tow anything with a car which was first used on or after the 1st August 1998 the car must be fitted with a type approved tow bar. 5. My car was first registered on 1st September 1998; do I need a Type approved tow bar? Yes, all cars first registered on or after 1st August 1998 must be fitted with a type approved tow bar if they are to be used for towing. 6. How can I tell if a tow bar is type approved? Each type approved tow bar will have a label, plate, or stamping detailing its type approval number for example E11xxxxxxx, and the details of the vehicle for which it is an approved fitment. 7. May I fit a type approved tow bar myself? Yes provided you use the car manufacturer's approved mounting points, and follow the tow bar manufacturer's instructions. i.e. EU regulations again I think you will find that most after market 4x4 receivers etc are NOT type approved . Reason probably being that it is too expensive to get type approval. Madness or what? Brendan |
