Hi all, another little electrical gremlin I need help with!!
Very strange thing was noted yesterday, got into the 110, turned the engine on and then turned the lights on, side and dipped. As I did this, I noticed that the blue tell-tale on the dash for main beam flickered and then was dimly lit. So I pulled the main beam 'flash' stalk and main beam came on, but then would not go off. Only way I could get them off was to turn all the lights off, then back on again. So we all know, I have JW Speaker Evo 2 lights fitted on the front, with some Roolight spots on the a bar, all wired via relay and separate fuse to operate on main beam/flash. On top of that I then have the low power draw LED roof spots, again all wired via relay and fuse to a switch then on the dash. So basically... When I am driving at night with just side and dipped illuminated the blue tell tale dimly lights, and once I have turned the main beams on, the fog lights on the a-bar will not turn off, even with the stalk back in the dipped position. It never used to do this! It would appear that the relay operating the a bar mounted spot lights is not clicking back into 'off' position. I have swapped it with another good relay and the fault is still there. Could it be getting a duff feed from somewhere and staying on? This only happens when the engine is running. If the ignition is on but no engine everything works as it should. Any ideas why it has suddenly decided to do this? Very annoying!! Best, Doug. |

Could also be a faulty relay. If the diode has failed it will also back feed and dimly illuminate the light. Also that would explain the relay sticking closed and the lights not turning off. Just a guess - I'm not an expert 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Right, done some digging.
It appears the auxiliary lights (spots that are remaining on) take their trigger feed from the dash main beam warning light. This has to be where the duff feed is coming from, hence dash ligh on, spots on. That answers why the relay for the spot lights is not closing. Now, the question is, why is the dash light illuminating (and hence the main beams on the JW Speakers staying on)... Either it is getting a 12v feed from somewhere or the relay for the lights has stuck. Anyone know where this is located? Is it the relay in the fuse box under the dash? Best, Doug. |

Right, just swapped some relays around (making sure they are the same to check the lighting circuit... Fault still there.
I have checked the main switch (horn, indicator, flash etc) and nothing seems to be up there... But could be that I suppose? Or the main light switch just behind that one?! Beginning to think I may have to call an auto electrician out! Best, Duggie. |

Update:
After disconnecting the trigger wire to the auxiliary lights, therefore isolating them from the issue, the fault is still present. So here is a far more simplified explanation of the fault: The main beams (blue tell tale and all) are triggered with the ignition on or engine running when the main light switch is activated and in the 'dipped' position. Sidelights behave as they should. Any thoughts? Best, Duggie. |

I was also thinking that, however, it was changed for a genuine Lucas item from a LR Dealer about two weeks ago.
Then again, that could be the answer right there! Best, Duggie. |

Disconnected the main/flash/horn switch and of course, the headlights go out but so does the blue tell-tale. Now... Would this lead to the assumption that the switch is at fault? As in, at least the feed to the tell-tale isn't between it and the switch.

Right, quick update. Had a hand from a friend of mine who is very much an auto electrical whizz.
Against what I thought, he decided to test the JW Speaker Evo II headlights that I fitted in January, and suspected that the Nearside one was duff. Quick call to Mobilecentre and Billy there told me to get it sent back to them. Just had the news today that the light is indeed defective, very unusual but a fault with the internal circuit. New one being sent out for tomorrow. May I just publicly say a big thanks to Sam Tompkins at Cadley Garage in Marlborough, top blokes and Land Rover specialists there, and a special thanks to Billy at Mobilecentre, who has dealt with a potentially embarrassing issue for them swiftly and efficiently. I'll try the light tomorrow and see if the fault is cured! Only left me £11.00 out of pocket for postage. Not bad really. Best, Duggie. |

So, the new light arrived last week and it was all fitted up... problem is still there, more interestingly, if the light units are swapped, the fault moves and stays with the (new) light unit.
If I replace both led headlights with standard bulbs, the fault goes and all is as it should be. Two new JW Speaker EvoII headlights on the way to me this morning (again, a fantastic service by Mobilecentre), we will see! Best, Duggie. |

Fixed!
Two replacement light units arrived on Tursday and I have fitted them this evening, it seems that has done the job. There were questions raised at Mobilecentre about wether my vehicle was causing the problem. Even after both of the units were found to be faulty and the earths and wiring were checked and even after assuring them that it worked fine before, and worked fine now with standard bulbs fitted. I was a little annoyed about this but will go no further on this topic. An otherwise decent experience of customer service. Thanks all! |
