Those are standard brackets on a 110, I'd buy a nakatenenga rear bracket plate that stops the rear bracket eventually breaking the bottom of the rear 1/4 panel. 4x4 overlander sell them and they don't cost much. Personally I'd clean them up and spray some bilt hamber uc clear wax on the metal brackets as they can rust, so a little time looking after them now keeps them nice in the future. Ray

Thanks! Just looking at the website, I cannot seem to find nakatenega. Is Entreq any good? http://www.4x4overlander.com/product/entre...ainless-2/ |

You need this thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic6088.html?highlight=mudflap To explain, it's the bolt in the aluminium body panel that works loose and pulls through...not the bracket itself. Usually because the mudflap flaps in the wind at motorway speeds, or mud and crud and touching the ground when offloading cause strain on the fastening. This fastening...: You can buy them, or make them (as I did) using a bit of aluminium strip cut to length with a hole drilled...It's just to reinforce the panel...not the bracket...The reinforcement like this (borrowed from "Red desert": Click image to enlarge Entreq ones here http://www.4x4overlander.com/product/entre...rackets-2/ avoiding this (the mounting bolt has pulled-thru the aluminium body panel): Click image to enlarge YRM also do nice brackets if you need them (but it's the panel reinforcement you need I think - not the bracket) http://www.yrm-metal-solutions.co.uk/epage.../008C-0003 Cheers Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) Last edited by MartinK on 2nd Mar 2016 5:48pm. After doing a home made repair kit on my offside one i noticed the nearside one hanging off after the Snowman Rally so i've ordered the Gwyn Lewis kit.
I'll let you know what I think once i've fitted them. Also after coming out and finding one of the front flaps on the driveway were it had just fallen off with the wind due to the rotten bracket i replaced them with a stainless set. |

Happens to me in both sides after 1 year of use. Finally I put an alloy L shape (Thickness: 1 mm, length 8") riveted to the panel and no more problems since. Easy to do an cheap Cheers Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |

^^^ Agreed, it's an easy and cheap job to reinforce the wing lip with a length of extruded aluminium pop rivetted or Sikaflaxed in place. Steve.

Thank you for this. I didn't really understand the issue until you sent this across. Unfortunately the Entreq reinforcing brackets in the link do not seem to be in stock. I am thinking of removing all the mudflaps for now until I sort this out to prevent any damage to the bodywork. Mine is a 110. Is this an issue for the front mudflaps as well, or just the rear? |

That's what I did. APK - it's probably not super-urgent - I did a fair few miles in mine before reinforcing the body panel. And Eduardo says 12 months - I'm sure loads of owners never bother and don't have a problem... a 10cm piece of aluminium strip with a hole drilled is really about all you need (like a large "repair washer"). I have heard the mudflaps can be weakened by towing certain trailers - like a vortex of air making them flap even harder... If I remember rightly, I replaced the nuts/bolts with stainless ones too, and lathered the whole lot in dinitrol. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

What I did with a section of right angle - don't see the need to drill extra holes or use an adhesive - the only extra thing i did was use a large repair washer on the underside - but that was because of the shape of the lip after just a few hundred miles with the standard fixing - from my experience I'd say do it sooner rather than later: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |
