Nato Pintle/Hitch Alternative
I'm currently in the process of building an "expedition" trailer, that I can drag around behind me when doing some longer laning trips and I'm trying to work out what hitch to go for.

I'm after something that will allow the trailer high levels of articulation particularly on ascents and descents, beyond what a normal 50mm ball with allow. The obvious answer is a Nato pintle, but I'm not a fan of them, they clonk and bang,

I've seen Treg hitches (http://www.tregtrailers.com.au/poly-block-couplings/) used in Aus which seem to be perfect but I can't find a UK supplier and I'm not even sure if they'd be legal over here.

Has anyone used anything different or have any more information on Treg style hitches.

Have tried looking at the treg website but am getting database error.

I would suggest that you contact them and ask if they are type approved tow hitches or not. If type approved need to know if Australian only or conforms to European type approval. If European type approval then just do a personal import. Please note you are likely to be liable for import duty and VAT on it arriving in the UK

If not European type approved, then look at the classification of your Defender. If your Defender is N1 commercial vehicle then you do not need type approval towing equipment.

Thanks for the response. If I'm honest I hadn't even thought to check if the hitch needs to be type approved Laughing

I'll get in touch with them and see about importing but I get the feeling the cost will outweigh the benefits so if anyone has any other alternatives I'm all ears.

Now it might be worthwhile to talking to your local trailer centre/towing equipment and check that 'type approval' means type approval by any country. All to do with UNECE harmonisation of vehicles etc.

I know, I know, but any additional clonks and bangs might distract me from all of the important ones... Razz

I've pulled a few Sankeys in the past with other peoples Defenders and all but one knocked, I guess it might have just been a worn pintle.

I'm starting to think it'll just be easier to go down the Nato route.

Just saves you having to look in the rear view mirror to check the trailer is still there.

I think the main reason you can end up with a rattley Sankey hitch is because there's not enough weight on the hitch. Mine tows so much better with some weight in the front.
