OK if you don't want dimming then add the relay Thumbs Up

This on on a 90? That extra load will be no problem, just use a permanent live and the switched ground from the 10AS.

I think I'd be reluctant to use a relay, depending on the relay it might chatter when the dimming starts.

Does anyone know what sort of interior lighting the Discovery 1&2 had?

A 110 mate so 4 lights... yes when the roof lights dim, these should remain on, will that work, does the 10AS switched ground remain after the dimming? Andy

Ah right, in that case you would be wise to use a relay. If you were talking about a 90 hardtop with only one interior light then adding a bit to it wouldn't matter, but a 110 it's under heavier load anyway.

Plumb the relay in to the existing interior light circuit across the permanent live and switched ground. When you open a door it will switch on, it will then remain on for a time after you shut the door and half way through dimming (all being well) it will turn off. The only thing is it might buzz for a bit during the dimming.

Sorry about all the confusion!

Yes, your circuit is using the existing permanent live and switched ground out of the 10AS to control the relay. If they're 3W bulbs and you've got 4, then that's 12W or 1A. So something small! Or just piggyback off the permanent 12V to the current interior lights, don't need a fuse then because it's already fused.

5A cable would be fine so long as it's fused properly. If you're using the current 10A fuse then you should be fine, cable rated for 5A will blow a 10A fuse if there's a fault. Belt and braces would be to put in another 5A fuse.

Buzzing... no, there's nothing you can do about it. The lights are dimmed by something called PWM - pulse width modulation. Basically there are some electronics that turn the power on and off very quickly, so quickly that you can't see it. When it's dimming there comes a time when the off pulses are too long for the relay to stay energised and the on pulses are long enough for it to re-energise. It's not very good for either the relay or the control circuit.

What would I do? Get some low current LEDs for all your interior lights (they're not very expensive) and your door lights. Do away with the relay, just wire them all in direct. You'll be using less current than the original system used and you can do away with any relays, additional complications etc. Simples.

I used the bigger one from these guys but it's if anything a bit too bright. This is the smaller one:

Your current lights will be drawing something like 750mA each, the "big" LED unit is about 170mA so if I guesstimate the smaller one at 100mA, changing the three internal lights for three of them will leave plenty of spare to power your 3W door lights. Warmer white lights are available too.

All sorted!!!

I tried another relay I have in the defender spares drawer, and all is quiet! Working a treat... Only had 8 amp cable and tapped into the interior light wires and I didn't have an in line fuse anyway...

Thanks for the help! Andy
