..Turbo question..
..hi guys..i have question regarding turbo on my defender..car is perfectly fine and there is no issues, so im just curious...i never had car with turbo, so having said that, im not sure how maintenance for turbo goes. I mean, i understand that turbine spinning at high rpm...higher rpm means more wear and tear, so having said this, what is life expectancy for turbo in my defender? And how it would look like maintenance intervals, to make sure all is perfectly fine. How you check over your turbo, provided that you cant really access any moving parts from outside, so what would be symptoms or something, that is time to pay attention to it and change this or that??

should be maintenance free for many years however couple of tips

1/ use the correct oil and change at correct intervals
2/ ensure air filter is good and intake pipework is leak free (never run without a filter)
3/ start engine and allow to idle for a few seconds before revving (allows oil to reach bearings)
4/ allow to idle for a few second before switching off, bit longer if you have thrashed it (allows some cool down stopping oil degeneration in hot turbo)
5/ if so inclined fit a crank case oil separator to stop crankcase oil going through the compressor (stops dirty oil hitting turbine, egr and inter cooler etc) (or vent via filter to atmosphere)

turbo should last as long as the rest of the engine if looked after but like anything some dont for no apparent reason DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

The thing I do is let it idle for a few minutes to bring temperature down when I had a strenuous drive, eg uphill, fast motorway at high ambient temperatures etc. This is because of the oil inside the turbo-shaft otherwise gets permanently into contact with the high surface temperatures without circulation, that results in coking effects. I do not think there are active mainenance procedures, but would be interested though....

The only form of check you can do really is to remove the plastic air inlet elbow from the turbo and check the compressor/turbine shaft bearings for wear by wiggling the shaft. Aside from that, it is really a fit-and-forget component.

As noted above, keep on top of your oil maintenance and always allow the engine to idle long enough before shutting down to allow the turbine to spin down (definietly don't do the 'old school' thing of blipping the throttle just before turning off the ignition)!
