Spare wheel carriers
Apologies if this subject has already been discussed many times.
Interested to hear from you regarding rear wheel carriers and their merits / drawbacks.
There are a few different ones Mantec and Masai and most seem to be coated steel.
Does anyone make a stainless version, aluminium or at least any that wont rust?

Is it better to keep it on the back door and upgrade the hinges? The new Puma doors seem to have extra stiffening, so is a separate carrier necessary?

Question Question

Nakatenenga do (what I believe) the best wheel carrier, sold by 4x4 overlander in England it's single pivot and made of stainless steel and also fits with the Nas rear step. I think a wheel carrier is still needed even with better door construction as the hinges are also weak. Ray

I have had no problems with my Mantec, fitted from new.

Does what it says, keeps the weight of the wheel off the rear door.

It's coated black, it matches my vehicle. Cheers Simon

Thanks for your input. They do look good and dont require the body of the Defender to be drilled.

I fitted a Britpart carrier to my 110 and I have to say its been really good, no problems whatsoever. Biggest bonus is it's half the price of the so called branded competition !

I'm also trying to decide which spare wheel carrier to get.
I'm almost decided on a Safari Equip single pivot carrier.
But I keep changing my mind on a daily basis...

They are a lot of money which is why I'm thinking a Mantec one. But they are nicer and doesn't require drilling the body...
Dilema dilema dilema...

I'm looking ahh the Safari Equip, galvanized, with the platform for the hi-lift Jack. I think it's the only one out here that has a hi-lift mount.

Anyone have any experience with that one? it's a Landrover thing...

Yes. Safari Equip on mine with Hi-lift Jack Mount. Galvanised and without any powder-coating.
Comes with BZP coated nuts and bolts which I changed myself for stainless socket heads.

Yup, that's the one. Planning on getting the galv one and powder-coating it myself. I'm assuming it's going to fit with a NAS bumper. Overall are you happy with it? Fit's well, works well?? Any insite would be appreciated, there are none over here for me to look at and compare. it's a Landrover thing...

It works perfectly and was fairly easy to fit. No instructions came with it mind but it's reasonably obvious to work out.
Before I got it I was thinking of fitting a damper for the door but it's perfect now.
It dampens the door swing down which is fine.

Grease nipples are fitted everywhere you might need one.
For longevity, I would replace the nuts and bolts with stainless as a matter of course.
The quality of the galv is very good and it's solid.
I didn't spec the powder-coated version because I wouldn't trust it to look good in 5 years time.

Total cost was something like 230GBP, I think. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have had a bad experience with Safari Equipe's service (or lack of it). I don't like giving such negative feedback, but since you seem to order for delivery to Canada, I think that a heads-up is appropriate.

Last April, I ordered a track rod guard and a galvanised/powder-coated spare wheel carrier in preparation for our trip to Iceland. I expected a lot of corrugated and bumpy roads in the highlands, so wanted quality stuff. 5 or 6 weeks before our departure, I inquired explicity and by phone if they could deliver in time and was told it shouldn't be a problem - so I gave them my credit card details after receiving a quote for shipment.

I was a bit nervous about the installation before the trip, so during the next few weeks, I inquired regularly about the expected delivery. Week after week I was told it would arrive soon and I got all sorts of excuses: it's the delivery firm messing up, it's stuck in customs (on a delivery within the EU?!?) etc etc.
I can't help but think that I was lied to, not in the least because they never charged my credit card - I can't imagine a supplier shipping expensive goods to a first-time client without settling payment first. At a given moment I confronted them with the fact that it allegedly was en route although my card wasn't charged, and asked them if they were telling the truth and to please tell me if they couldn't deliver, since I really needed a carrier for the trip and still could buy one elsewhere. I was assured that it was on it's way...
Eventually we left for Iceland with the spare wheel taking precious space in our cargo/living space and I have never heard from S.E. ever after.

Maybe a distributor is a better choice, if I'm not mistaken extreme 4x4 has S.E too.
Meanwhile I have decided for a Nakatanenga wheel carrier. Not only is it compatible with a NAS step and less intrusive on the Defender's classic looks, but it also has an extra support underneath the corner where the frame goes upwards. Most single pivot carriers don't have this and rely on the pivot and the door only. Also, it doesn't require drilling in the bodywork, there's just one or two holes in the crossmember that have to be made a bit larger.

Greetings,

Joris (sorry for the rant)

Edit: i was wrong about the looks and compared it to the hinged carrier.
