90 HT - Standard Stereo
Hi all, picking up my 90HT XS with its standard spec stereo in a few weeks time. Fully prepared to be underwhelmed by the acoustics and the sound system. I don't need huge volume and the finest clarity sounds, but i have a feeling I will want to upgrade things to the point where I can properly enjoy good music and a podcast or two at 70mph cruise. Can anyone advise a sensible way to upgrade the system without major internal modification? Thanks

What year? Are we talking about the single cd slot one or the alpine BT one ?

I am very pleased with this set up. It performs to my liking, quality sound.

These were installed when I ordered my 90 from Urban.

I believe the standard head unit can connect to the subwoofer/amp. Cheers Simon

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you

That´s a big subject that is well covered in various threads on this form. I´ll give you my personal shot on it. Hope it answers your question.

Starting from the factory fitted unit and dash speakers (single cone mid range and separate tweeters), and rear single cone speakers. The sound is shallow, with enough high frequency, some mid range, but no bass.

The first step is a subwoofer mounted on the rear of the cubby. It fills out the missing base the standard 10" speakers cannot deliver, and is the biggest single improvement you can make. There are several that fit the back of the cubby so well they look like they belonged there. Easy to wire up. An independant fused + feed from the battery next door, an earth, signal off the rear speakers or a dedicated din off the head unit. Power signal feed (to switch it on only when the head unit is on) and that´s it.

If that didn´t reach your expectations, or you want more functionality - look at an aftermarket head unit. Bluetooth (for phone and music, if the standard unit doesn´t have it), a little more power and better sound quality, and other features such as a more informative display, built in navigation or a rear view camera. At that point you are already likely to be looking at a double din installation.

Because there are so many options with the head unit, it is worth waiting, reading up on what others have done, and analysing what your own needs are.

The subwoofer is in my view the first and most effective upgrade, with minimal investment of time and money. I have run both my TD4´s with only Alpine subwoofers and single din head units (mid range Kenwoods) and am extremely pleased with the quality. I like to have a large navi screen mounted high up where I can see it and rotate to passenger or driver, or remove to programm seperately, so I haven´t yet gone to a double din, although they do offer some wonderful features. I haven´t changed the speakers yet, and from what I have heard and read, as long as one stays with the 10" cone size, it isn´t going to be the biggest of improvement. Please feel free to correct me on that.

Also on the project list, I consider the next upgrade (before swapping the speakers) to be soundproofing. The flat aluminium and hard plastic surfaces just limit how much a good sound system can achieve. Just as important as the sound quality is the quality 0f temperature management that the insulation will give you. I have a marvelous Ebersbacher heater fitted, which we really enjoy, but notice how quickly the warmth dissapates out of the Defender on switching it off. On the move, the TD4´s standard heater and AC is excellent, but would both profit from better insulation.

Here I´ve gotta Pete´s excellent thread...

Thanks for the suggestions folks. Let the research and shopping games begin!!

The car is a standard stereo spec, 15/16MY production 90XS. I don't actually know exactly what's in there yet (haven't picked it up yet), I see two speakers in the bottom of the dash panel top of footwell and i see two speakers in a speaker trim unit on the rear panels.

Do you guys know what size and power these existing speakers will be? Would be there much value in just putting better speakers in the existing brackets, plugging a small back of cubby subwoofer in and keeping the existing head unit I wonder?

Would the existing head unit cope with more demand I wonder, at what point do i need separate amp?

Standard single cd loading Alpine head unit i believe, options codes and descriptions as on my car spec sheet below:

Hmm, first time I've stepped onto the house of Urban website, yummy, some lovely kit in there Smile

Headunit is fine, links well with Iphone, so will do sat nav via bluetooth etc. I'd upgrade the speakers first as the standard LR ones are pants. I have focal as many do. Its good but lacks bass due to there size and the acoustics of a tin can. Adding an active sub is good, various options but LR supplly an Alpine like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALPINE-SWE-1200-...yu~lST0Q-. This works well for most, and amps arnt needed, but you can go OTT if you want Whistle

If you only listen to Radio 4 like me then you'll be more than happy with the OEM Alpine. Bluetooth connection with iPhone is spot on. Don't understand all this tweeter/woofer stuff. I turn the rear speakers off so it doesn't upset the dogs. I know you audiophiles will be cringing but I'm an audiophilistine. Defender 90XS SW

You´ve spotted the four 10 cm units, and you´ll probably find two tweeters at the outer corners on top of the dash. Rolling Eyes 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Really depends what sound quality you're used to I suppose, but I find the factory fitted unit just fine.

Thanks for the input folks. I'll let you know what I go with and how it works out. On this subject, though a bit biased in terms of the supplier, i thought this article was interesting re. OEM electronic equipment vs aftermarket tech;
