Switched Live to Radio remains permanent
Hi All

I haven't posted for a few years but been following some great stuff on here recently.

I have the standard radio and a Parrot MKI9200? Connected to the ISO plugs. Just recently the battery was draining if the Landy stood still for more than a week, I thought maybe at 5yrs + the battery was on the way out.

Having a look through I noticed that the parrot and radio supply remain live after the ignition is off. I got the voltmeter out to confirm this is the case right back at the ISO connectors. Haven't made any mods and not sure why this would suddenly occur.

Does anyone have the wiring loom diagram that I can try and trace back to see where the fault might be?

Anyone got any ideas where I might start? Pulled the 10A fuse to the radio circuit and it isolates as it should. Also noticed the internal lights isolate from the same fuse, is that correct?

I did add some internal LED strip lights a couple of years back looped off the existing lights so they switch when the doors are open. Do you think this may have caused it to affect the switched live???

Any help appreciated as I'm having to pull the parrot unit off and ensure the head unit isn't on to ensure I have enough juice to crank her.

Much appreciated.

There will be 2 power wires to the radio in the ISO plugs.
One will be a live feed to keep the clock/stations etc. in memory.
The other is the accessory wire feed to turn the radio on.

If the Parrot has recently been fitted double check it's wired in correctly.
If it's been in for a while I'd be thinking about getting the battery tested. Cheers,
Kyle.

just an idea: there are two +12V connections in the ISO connector: red - switched live, and yellow - permanent live. The yellow is used to hold memory of the radio. If yellow and red are interchanged, everything would function as normal but only the radio will be connected to permanent live even if the ignition is off.

Edit: Alien's answer appeared while I was typing mine. Same idea. Wink Cheers, Vincent

Thanks for the diagram.

Voltage between ignition and ground and permanent and ground both remain at 12+V whether ignition is on or off.

Parrot is a standard ISO loom plug in. I also connected radio direct to ISO plug as out of factory bypassing parrot loom and same happens. Radio remains live whe ignition is off....

All wires look in tact, no sheath damage right back to the cotton wadding before it disappears beyond dash...

It's a mystery to me.

Also check the wiring of the Parrot kit. Here the red wire is permanent live, and orange is ignition live (which is different from the radio wire colours)...

Check the Grey ISO connector on the vehicle's harness (C0098).

The wiring colours should be -

You should check these with the head unit and Parrot un-plugged from it.

Hi All

Thanks for the great help and diagrams.

Been out and checked. VeeTee you're correct, the ignition live and permanent live are swapped over on the Parrot but I must have reconciled that 5 years ago when I installed the Parrot as I already made that swap at the fuses.

To clarify and reference PaulMc

Voltage between 8 and 4 = Permanent live > voltage is 12+V either ignition on or off - Correct

Voltage between 8 and 7 = Switched live > voltage is 12+V either ignition on or off - ERROR!

I can't understand why power to the white/orange cable remains when the ignition is off?

The Parrot has been installed for almost 5 years to the day (see thread >> http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic5532.html )

Any other ideas what might cause line to port 7 to remain live even when ignition is off?

Would be great if anyone has a loom diagram so I can trace downline, maybe an error at the ignition module? I have been having quite a bit of water in footwell, perhaps corrosion wherever these connect line 7 to ignition module? Is there a common live feed from the ignition module and does anyone know where it lives?

Thanks for great support guys.

Has anything else been fitted anywhere linking the two together?
Must be isolated to a degree as if you had full ignition power you'd have the dash power up etc.

Sounds like either, voltage leakage due to moisture or corrosion as you said from perm 12v to ignition 12v.

Or there has been some wiring wrongly wired, or a slim possibility there is a live to live shirt.

Is the ignition voltage stable when you check it?

Also to confirm

Checked the Illuminated port and this functions fine

Between 8 and 6 = Illumination Live - 0V when lights off 12+V when Lights on.

Nothing else been wired - the Parrot kit is a straight ISO plug-in loom.

The only thing that I wired in were LED lights which I looped in parallel soldering new tabs to front and rear existing lights and just piggy backing these. Very low Wattage so no reason to wire in to a relay. These have been installed fro 2 years and also never affected.

Any ideas where the white/orange line runs so I can try and trace?

This is a big mystery!

Hi Custom Steve - Thanks for info - voltage remains stable in ignition off (12.1V) and ignition on (14.2V)

All seems to be as normal.

Battery drain (mentioned in original post) is very likely just related to Parrot and radio being left on for over a week...

This diagram shows the power distribution from the battery, via the ignition switch, and fuse boxes -

I've edited-out all the unrelated circuits.

Paul - you're a star!

OK Mystery deepens.

Fuse 44 was blown, sorry could have sworn I checked that one!

Put a new 5A fuse in and the ventilation fan motor starts up for a couple of seconds then blows. Put a 10A fuse in and fan motor runs continuously.

Neither fuse in or out affects switched live line to radio which remains permanentl...

I am now even more confused. Would appear that switched live to radio has somehow shorted across to fan live - interestingly the fan switches with ignition when fuse 44 is empty (i.e. off when ignition is off and only on when ignition is on)

Any ideas...

Anyon have any ideas how to trace the fault?

Thoughts are to look for current draw but frankly I don't know where to start?

Do circuits often short? All the cables shrouding or insulation look in as new. I'm clueless.

The second wire diagram shows fuses 43,cig lighter/44, radio/45, heater fan are all getting a feed from the accessory circuit off the ignition switch.
I'd start to see if all of them are live, if so it's a faulty switch or wire between the switch and fuse box. Cheers,
Kyle.
