From what I recall, it wasn't so much that they didn't work, broadly speaking they did, although I seem to recall that the Landrover bit sticking out the front was rather more fragile than the CVR(T) bit at the back. It was rather that no-one really had a need for a half-track any more.
The half-track was really a compromise conceived to add full-track mobility to vehicles with limited mobility, and generally modern armies use either wheeled or fuil-tracked vehciles now. So its failure to take off was more due to the fact that it solved a problem which didn't exist any more than anything else. That being said, I always felt is was one of the coolest of all Landrover derivatives and I want that so much! |

I'm going to have to dig out my leaflet - some of the derivatives were brilliant...

this Land Rover was the Centaur by Laird.
Looks to me like it had been used by the military as a deliberate target practice vehicle, and the blow over in light olive paint had been done to make it look prettier for sale. I had a ride in the Desert Sand one in the 1990's when one of Twickenham Off Roaders had it. It was capable in a straight line but was not agile on the corners.
The one for sale is Protoype 6. The wiki page is quite good for this vehicle. The last careful owner was Sadaam Hussain and it has acquired various bits of damage since he was forced to part with it. The REME museum seem to not want it anymore so it is a chance for the deep pocketed to get something very rare. 1995 Defender 110 CSW 1971 SIIA Lightweight |

As you probably know HMG has decided in its wisdom that Aborfield must close, so REME and its museum have moved to Lyneham.
The Centaur was privately owned and on loan to the museum, and, with space at a premium, it is perhaps not surprising that it has been denied a place. It is also not exactly in museum condition, though it does undoubtedly tell a story. |

Used to hate going there to refuel - always someone about that wanted to ask too many questions...
Back on topic: Auction stalled at £5,999 and reserve was not met. I wonder what the owner will do with it now? |
