This is the one I have fitted - a picture is worth a thousand words !
As you can see, there is no backplate to worry about.

Not sure where you got the photo from Bob but I would have a good guess who made them. Rolling with laughter

Would have a guess they were made about 2 miles away Thumbs Up

Maybe captive nuts was the wrong term Thumbs Up

The front plate bolts directly into the threaded part of the crossmember, there is no back plate to fit behind the crossmember. There are a couple more pick up points that are secured with nuts and bolts. Two side arms run along the chassis and are secured on the tie down eye bolts.

Very easy to fit, took me about 30 minutes to install mine.

Bob

gotcha. see for me, i dont want the arms because i dont want to bend the chassis but I appreciate we all want different things for different reasons.

Brendan, no that's cool, no need for you to go crawling around on a wet floor, thanks though.

Just note the drop plate is not legal for towing trailers etc in the Uk Thumbs Up

Interesting, can you point me in the right direction for more information?

Mike, yes it is an 09 Puma. IIRC on Pumas it has six captive nuts, whereas on 300 TDi you get a plate with 6 nuts welded on.

With the standard tank it is a straight forward fit. We have a 120 litre tank on so can not remember if we fitted it before or after the tank. It is too dark to crawl underneath now to see ease of fitment with the large tank on. If I remember will crawl under it in daylight and have a look

Its the tow bar type approval - vehicles past 1998 must have a tow bar that is type approved with an e number - the device must have its e number certificate visible or its type approval is deemed not valid (hence why i had to remove waxoyl off mine.

You find alot of these bits of kit arent type approved due to the cost.

have a look here http://www.caravanninglinks.com/goto/page/...explained/ a quick search will probably show you much much more

obviously vehicle extration is no problem as it only applies to the car/trailer towing. Oh and it will invalidate your towing insurance should you have it and an accident.

There is some discussion over the lcv - which the defender could now be (although there is a second can of worms previously discussed here!!) if you count it as one for towing, you need to count it the same and not exceed the 50mph speed limit! Mike

Oh just to add - all of Land Rovers towbars are type approved and i would suggest this is because they need to be Mike

I will add that as I caravan and tow a 26ft twin axle in the fine print of my caravan insurance from the caravan club it states that: Tow bar fitted to towcar needs to be type approved.....
