One of my old 90's had the same... Mach 5's and 35" Simex's were to blame, so unbalanced.... The bushes took a lot of hammering.

Mine was like that when I put Insas on. they were allegedly balanced when I bought them mail order, but wanted to check, one wheel unbalanced was 250g out!!!!! the best it was possible to get was 50g out, a lot better but you still notice it.
I did notice my balls are a bit slack and well pitted, so they on my list of "need to do" but there is quite a big difference in price everywhere of the kits including balls. Has anyone used Britpart ones, are they ok, where is the best place at a decent price? I don't want to be doing it again in a years time. 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6 1994 Def 90 300tdi |

It used to be a common problem in the early days of series vehicles, before the introduction of the Railko bushes into the upper swivel pins. Prior to the the Railko (which are friction damped using a material similar to brake linings) the upper pins consisted of a cone-shaped piece which provided the dampting, and fitted onto a splined pin, and spring loaded onto a cones-shaped seat pressed into the top of the ball. As the splines wore, a few degrees of undamped movement would become possible. This wouild lead to some terrifying 'death wobble' experiences, although applying moderate steering inputs could usually bring it back under control.
The first time it happens though you really do come close to a 'laundry moment' - it is so unexpected and violent! The very early Series 1 80" vehicles had taper roller bearing top and bottom and, I should imagine, were extremely prone to this, no doubt the reason for the introduction of the cone damper. |

I had to smile in memory at your comment Blackwolf regarding the Series set ups. In those days we got used to a bit of interaction with the steering wheel and it used to be who had the bottle to drive faster to find the "sweet spot" with no wobble

The checks are easy enough to do, jack up each corner and check the wheel for play in top bottom and left right motions, looks for worn track rod ball joints, steering damper issues, and of course, wheel balancing.

Those were the days, eh? The roads were empty, you could green lane anywhere because so few people did it it hadn't become contentious, it snowed properly in winter, and the summers were warm enough and dry enough to drop the windscreen and get the bugs in your eyes (and hair, and mouth, and nose). Petrol was only 4 shillings a gallon, and 5-star fuel was available at the pumps (which were all attended service), and Avon Traction Mileage tyres were readily available and considered quite aggressive. And if you tell that to the young folk of today, they won't believe you! |

Bathe only worrying thing was the fuel warning light flashing, everything else looked perfectly normal to me!
